1990 Johnson VRO (120hp)

Sunday I took the boat out for the first time in 4 weeks. The fuel was treated with Startron, oil was mixed properly (VRO is plugged) and the boat was serviced about 2 months ago and given a clean bill of health from Charleston Marine.

Problems that occured-

  1. After Launching the boat I headed out to put the engine through her paces before returning to the dock to pick up the others. As I accelerated the boat would not get on plane. The engine was trimmed completely down. It felt like it was slipping back into neutral and the engine made a loud revving sound but would not accelerate(this happened twice). I pulled back on the throttle and tried again, this time much slower and the boat planned out properly. After that it seemed to be fine and the rest of the day it didn’t happen again.

  2. Durring the day the boat would accelerate on her own.
When I run the boat I like to get on plane and then pull back on the throttle just enough to keep her on plane(I was told this helps with fuel economy) I wasn’t even touching the throttle when I noticed it the first time. The motor just increased in speed and then slowed back down to where I had her initially. This happened several times, one time it did the opposite and actually slowed down a bit and then went back up.
Could this all be related to the throttle cable?

On a side note, is it best to store a boat with a full tank of fuel or partially full or almost empty? I always add the inital dose of Startron everytime I fill up.

From a no-personal-experience-theoretical-only perspective it sounds like you prop hub is slipping… kinda like the still-original clutch on my 187,000 mile car…

I think it’s about $75 to have a new one pressed in. Going off what you described that’s all I can surmise b/c that’s the only way I know for the engine to rev up in gear w/o the boat actually accellerating (I’m ruling out caviataion and lower unit/linkage problems–you’d hear & feel it if you had a gear problem).

Thanks Baker,
after looking at the pics of your boat I would say it’s time to take the “Old and beat up” out of your signature

a fuel pump, primer bulb, anti siphon valve or other fuel restriction could cause the fuel to come and go
