1995 Johnson 88spl (essentially a 90). Was doing a water pump and decided to pull the upper bearing/ seal carrier and found milky oil. Not, only that, but it had no shims above the thrust washer and the thrust washer was broken into 3 pieces. Amazingly, the trust bearing looks OK. I can’t imagine how because it was pushing against a completely failed/broken thrust washer.
I could easily clean everything up, replace the thrust washer and seals and see how long she lasts.
But, with that kind of wear, I’m thinking that might not be the best course. So, I started pricing remanufactered lower units and found SEI. They have a lower unit, complete, except upper shaft and water pump for less than $1000. But, even $1000 seems like a lot to spend on a 19 year old motor… which, by the way, runs like a top.
So, should I do thrust washer and seals, or a new/ remanufactured lower unit, or is it time to buy a new etec?
Opinions?
Ideas?
anyone have a new etec 115 really cheap?

if you fix what you have, and it lasts, you have an extra $900 in your pocket
if it doesn’t, it was a $100
I would try to fix it

I like that logic.
We make to the jetties regularly , but, I haven’t had her outside the jetties in a long time. I’ll wait to take her out any further until she has new power. Worst case is towboatUS back to the hill.
Chris, do y’all carry these parts?

Thanks to Chris for the advice.
Spent about $160 on parts and put her back together. New gaskets, seals, shims, thrust washer, bearing carrier, water pump, and foot oil. Put her in the water Saturday morning and gently ran her for about an hour. Then, took the wife and daughter and her boy friend on a Mother’s Day harbor cruise with lunch outside at California Dreaming. The old 88spl seems to be in working order, again. She’s no speed demon, but, she sounds like she’ll do 23 mph at 3600 rpm forever, again.
Thanks for the counsel and parts, Chris V.

'Hope to be signing a lease very soon.
When we do, we’ll be spilling the beans.
