1999 Johnson 115 problem

I’ve got a 99 Johnson 115 2 stroke on my boat, and it has always been reliable but thirsty. Took it out today to do some fishing in the lake, and after drifting for awhile I went to crank it, and it wouldn’t turn over. Finally got it to start after 10 minutes or so after cranking it with the throttle pretty far forward (still in neutral obviously). Headed straight back to the ramp, and it hesitated pretty good at low rpms. Once it planed out and got going it ran fine. Any advice?

First guess. Carbs.

I had the same motor and had both carb problems and a powerpack problems that had pretty similar failure symptoms. Both common failure items and could be a coil too. Ended up having an ant clogging a jet in one of the carbs (doubt this your issue). Power pack is easy to change but a little pricey. Carbs are cheaper to fix but a PITA. Still a great motor.

Thanks for the replies. I was leaning towards carbs or power pack. Will run some seafoam through and see if that helps. Power pack doesn’t look to be difficult to switch out if needed. Has been a good motor but loves gasoline.

also possibly old gas or water in the gas? If it is carbs you can pick up a service manual online, get the parts and do them yourself. I did mine with no carb experience and it was pretty easy just a little time consuming.

Sea foam can help but it is not a real carb cleaning. If it might be carbs,I concur with get a manual, get the kits and rebuild. Or, take it to Chris V. Old hat for his crew.
