1999 Mercury 125hp Carbs

I removed, cleaned, and rebuilt my carbs last summer due to fuel/ethanol issues. Ethanol had eaten the inner lining of the fuel hose between the fuel/water separator and motor. Also replaced the inline fuel filter on motor. It was completely full of little chunks of plastic.

Seems to have fixed problems with fuel, but I can’t seem to get the carbs idled and sync correct. Any suggestions? Does it need to be hooked up to a computer to be done correctly?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

a carburated outboard does not have diagnostic capabilities(cannot hook a computer to it). Verify your idle mixture screws are out the correct amount of turns, make sure the throttle plates are completely closed, your idle adjustment is tuned by timing, verify idle timing as well as wot. Just a suggestion make sure you replaced your fuel line with silverado 3000 grey hose.

Thanks ShainD. How do I know what the correct number of turns are for the idle screws? Originally I left them where they were, but have been jacking with them ever since in order to try and dial it in. The motor runs on two cylinders while idling or trolling and then goes to all four when you give it the throttle to get on plane. The idling seems fine while trolling, but doesn’t have the power it once had while on plane.

Any more suggestions?

Probably not your idle mixture screws if it is at wide open throttle when you are having issues(1 1/4 +or- 1/4; verify your wide open timing @ cranking speed should be 25 BTDC. verify your throttle plates are fully open @WOT as well.

are you having issues at high speed or low speed

Issues are at high speed. The motor just doesn’t have the power or speed it once had. What does it cost to have the timing set? I just don’t want to spend a lot of money on a 12 year old motor.

A full sync & link typically cost an hour of whatever the shop rate is.

since teh problem started have you checked compression and spark?
always start there.
before you spend money having a carb sync done, you need to have a little diagnstic work done to find the problem.
a diagnostic at our shop is $79.

Thanks ShainD and ChrisV. I have owned the boat/motor for about four years and also know the previous owner. Motor has never had a professional look at it. Chris, I will give you a call next week.
