This would mark my first trip out far enough to target dolphin. Was a little apprehensive about going. I’ve never been that far out. I have been preparing for quite some time to make these kinds of trips. Pushed off Remleys about 7. Headed straight out of the harbor. Ran 30kts and didn’t look back. Rolling glass the whole way. Some sites on the way. In about 80ft, came across a pod of porpoise. Had to be 15-20 strong. At least that’s how it seemed. They decided to hug the boat and run with me for about 1/2 mile. 15-20 more miles out I saw a dorsal fin break the surface. Not a shark or a dolphin. In fear of laughter, I won’t say what I think it might have been. Somewhere around the 45-50 mile mark I saw a bird flying about a foot off the surface. Until it landed in the water and instantly disappeared. Then I realized it was a flying fish. Ran to 360ft. Trolled for about an hour. No action and no movement. Figured I was doing something wrong. Wasn’t favoring going any farther so ran south parallel to the coast. Noticed some misc debris in the water and thought, “Mahi like structure?!” Slowed down a bit to investigate. As I approached, an amazing blue shimmer scattering beneath the surface. And there they were. All the videos, all the research, and all the hard work to get here. Now I’m face to face with the coveted Mahi in the flesh. My excitement was overwhelming with this gorgeous animal that for a brief moment I forgot what I came here for. Reality kicked back in and I dropped some artificial baits. Ran back and forth by the structure and second pass my reel lights up. Strong fish and astonishing aerial show. To the boat then to the fish box. Landed my first Mahi. Fished about an hour and left them biting. Hooked up with 6 and boated 4. Never thought I’d see a lot of really cool stuff all in one trip. My first especially. Except the dorsal. Scared the ba-jesus outta me lol.
I guess the old saying is right. The sun does shine on a dogs arse every once in a while.
