i’ll be coming into Charleston for the first time for business on Mar. 20th. I made sure to build some fishing time into my schedule. If anyone would be so kind to give me a few pointers and where some decent public fishing is, what fish are in season, and maybe a little direction as far as live or artificial bait it would be greatly appreciated. I’m from Dayton, OH and my only salt water experience comes one week a year usually at Sanibel Island, FL.
You will need a fishing license. Public piers in Mt. Pleasant and Folly Beach.

Cbtc, come back to charleston!
Check out James island. Surf fishing. Breach inlet, or the piers
What type of fishing were you thinking? Do you have some gear or will you be renting? Folly beach pier rents and sells just about everything you would need. You might also consider going with a local guide. By the time you rent your equipment and pay for bait and other items, you might be close to what you would pay for a charter who will provide everything you need and put you on some fish. Also a lot of good inshore charters, you might take a look at. I got addicted to inshore fishing behind Sanibel Island. Awesome area. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions. If pier fishing is the route you take, click in the upper right corner of your screen “all forums” and check out the forum specific to pier, you might learn more there! Good luck!

We hope you enjoy your visit. Seriously, you could live here for 5 years and still be figuring out how to consistently catch inshore fish. Mid March can be real iffy weather wise, and Mother Nature seems to be a little grumpy this time of year. I would suggest, as others have, that you charter an inshore trip(Offshore=$$$$). You can split the cost with one or two people, and the cost becomes quite reasonable. You won’t need an out of state license with a guide, the tackle is provided, and the local flavor that a decent guide provides can be part of an entertaining and informative visit. Do your homework…this site and the internet are excellent resources. Talk to the guide ahead of time about his or her weather cancellation policy, and be sure to tip them around 20% unless they are rude and unprofessional. I doubt that they would be. I truly believe you won’t regret spending whatever it costs you.

hire a guide
Good luck wherever you decide to fish!
Thanks for the advice. I have hired an inshore guide (red fish) for 1/2 day on Monday and plan on doing some pier fishing with my own gear as well. What is the best species to target while i’m pier fishing?

My advice, buy some shrimp and throw them under a cork or on a carolina rig. That should cover you for redfish, trout, sheephead, drum, and flounder.

As a second choice rig I would drag a mud minnow on a Carolina Rig. If you find that you’re getting hung up a whole lot, switch to the rig Jon suggested.
Good luck
