1st trip offshore

Got a little tunna, amberjack and two dolphin.

This was my first ever trip out offshore capt. a cousins boat running ballyhoo 80-120ft behind the boat trolling at 7-10mph. Saw tons of flying fish. bunch of turtles and a school of amber jack about 45-55 thick. Saw 2 cobia one big and one small. Still have a lot to learn. couldn’t id. the hundreds of tiny schooling fish we saw on the surface but they were out there by the thousands.

All in all a great day.
Any help/comments appreciated for making my next trip better.

Those conditions are few and far between! Not bad for your first trip. Trial and error my friend…you wont get much help on here. And that “tuna” is actually a bonito, im assuming the meat was very bloody and gamey…keep up the good work!

Thats why they call it “fishing” and not “catching”!

Thats a little tunny

flat calm,could-a had em out da john bote that day.
lil tunny make great bait,congrats!!

First tip, Look like a fisherman. Those shorts are killer:smiley:. You must of put some miles with the extra gas you had with you. Second tip, if you need extra gas you may be pushing your luck. Be careful out there the sea is not forgiving. Nice fish.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

the extra gas was a caution measure. we only ran half a tank.

thanks for the shorts comment i tend to like them as well.

can i drop in live bait after a catch is made to mulitply my catch for the schooling fish that follow?

Thanks yall for being a source of info it really helps since i come from a place that isn’t so friendly.

Nice work…can’t wait to get my boat out of the shop and get out there!

BTW…was Ron Burgandy on your boat too?

Was that BORAT?

Nice gaff shot on the dolphin.

Those shorts are dual purpose, they also serve as a storm warning flag! Great job guys! Good pics.

CAUGHT SEVERAL LITTLE TUNNY’S THE OTHER DAY, THEY ARE VERY GOOD TO EAT. JUST CAN’T EAT THEM SUSHI GRADE.

The “little tunny” is what we call in these waters “Bonito”. I have tried to clean and prepare it several ways and have found all methods to be repugnant. If someone out there knows a good method for turning these guys into anything but bait (great shark bait, by the way), I am all ears. I have even tried thoroughly bleeding then grilling…still tastes strongly fishy and oily.

Nice first trip, just be careful out there. The weather off Charleston can get ugly in a hurry and the weatherman lies ALOT.

I am %99.99 sure that the “little Tunny” a false albacore not a bonito. They are two different fish. The bonito has straight lines going over the back and the false albacore (one in picture above) has broken lines. I have found that the bonito is pretty good on the table but the false albacore not so much. But the FA does make great shark bait/chum its very bloody.

you can also cut that colorful strip of broken lines into a strip bait and rig it up. Excellent sailfish rig.

Save the rest of the meat for chunking or bottom dropping…nasty eating.

Congrats on catching some fish on your first trip out! PS that’s a kicka$$ stash you are sporting.
