2/08 Personal best trout today

Hit the Wando about a hour before high tide and fished some new spots with no bites. After some more spots with no bites I decided to go thought the smoke ( something big was burning behind Juba Island ) to last stop of the day. About mid falling tide and caught this 21" trout on a MinnowZ Pearl/ Blue Glimmer on Chartreuse Trout Eye 3/16. Took his picture and released him back to grow some more. Caught 5 more smaller trout for the day. Beautiful weather for Feb. 08.

Nice work! I would of had a hard time not taking him home for the smoker. Good on ya!

Nice fish! Some of my best fishing spots have been discovered due to my usual spots not working.

Nice fish, would have a hard time putting him back.

Awesome job staying with it! Good fish too!!

Myrtleman, the more like those you release, the more you will be able to catch better/more fish in the future…

I know that, but it still would be a hard fish to release, don’t keep them all just a couple, here and there.

A suggestion that I have kept to for the last 5 years: Release all trout over 20" as a rule. Basically observe your own upper slot even though its not the law per-se. These fish are almost always female, have superior genes (likely), and release orders of magnitude more eggs than smaller fish. Plus, it just might help us have more trophy trout here in the future!

Sounds like a good rule, I’ll adopt it.

Thanks for all your replies !! I was going to reply that my friend Optiker has taught me to release any trout or redfish over 20". He beat me to it:smiley: Glad he has posted several time on this subject. I hope this will encourage others to do the same. I still had two 16" to have a meal and they were delicious. Also I ordered a 16 x 20 poster of this picture to have for a keep sake.

Good policy to practice.

Just like.every human doesn’t grow as big as Shaquille O’neill, only a small percentage of fish have the genetics to grow big. Keep that DNA circulating, release the big ones.

Nice trout! The background you have on there is pretty cool.

Nice trout and a lovely photo. I agree with the larger trout release that Optiker and others suggest especially when I’m having a decline in catching trouts of any size in many of the areas they use to be plentiful.
