What a nice day to be out fishing. Best weather in months. Lots of bird and bait activity. With the little creeks being shutdown for the most part, I got a call from a buddy who was getting into the reds pretty good with a couple in the 25 to 30 inche range. I went out armed with my 500 series ultralight with expectations of hitting some schooly reds and maybe a upper slot fish. First spot nothing but I did find out that I forgot to respool after having several break offs to hang ups and a wind knot the trip before. I decided to tighten my drag down a good bit to avoid getting spooled with the little bit of line I had. First cast at a new spot I get slammed hard by something heavy and the drag squeaks a little and i get broke off nearly instantly. Over the next few minutes I caught a couple of reds like 16 and 17 inches. I moved to another spot bit wasn’t feeling it so I looked around and I saw a spot and had a strong feeling the fish would be there. First cast I almost instantly hook up when my bait hits the water. I thought it was a decent red and through the clear water I saw a decent red with some shoulders on him. Knowing I had a little over 30ft of line and 6lb test I knew right away it was time to finesse this guy in without waking him up and causing him to go on a strong rod. I fought him for a couple minutes giving him what I could and letting him take as much as I could without hitting the knot. I only had a couple wraps on the reel for most of the fight and had him real close multiple times until I could finally grab him. Without a doubt the most skill I’ve had to use to land a red in some time and the most satisfying catch in a while. I fished for a short time on the low incoming tide and left happy after catching a bigger than expected red and witnessing it in. I was thinking the whole time before that if I hook a decent red I’m getting demolished and after finding out my buddy had landed several nice ones and the instant break off on the first heavy fish I thought for sure I was doo
Nice day it was for you! Great catch!

Thanks 40,I enjoyed the report.I admire you young fellas that go out with a small amount of tackle and gear.I can’t seem to leave the house without everything ,3 tackle boxes,at least 4 rods and an assortment of gear and odds and ends.Did you see any garfish, thats when I notice ,the fish really start biting?
This weekend was pretty unbeatable! Great report! Finesse baits and light tackle was a blast this weekend!

Same spot same tide and I got 1 on the first cast that was real close to 30 but this time I was spooled up and put some pressure on him and he gave me a few nice runs. This one was a lot fatter and healthier than the one in the picture which was skinny and kind of beat up like he winter reds get. My buddy caught a couple nice ones and one was the most coppered color red I’ve seen in person and the most coppered color red I’ve seen in charleston. A real beauty that fought like a heavyweight. He out fished me 2 days in a row with artificials vs the mud minnows. Both produced but he covered more ground and kept his presentation in the strike zone better. Today he fished a gulp mostly on a light jig.
