So I stole Got2Go’s normal crew and headed out on Sunday, still feeling the effects of Brewvival the day before. The plan was to load up on triggerfish and so we hit some spots I have that reliably produce and we found the Seabass were thicker than usual. We quickly limited and then the bluefish moved in. They were hitting everything and the little ones were nasty vicious and were hitting swivels and knots and so some rigs came up without even the leader. All sizes to the bluefish and we kept a bucket full for Matt to put on the smoker. I’m still waiting to hear how they turn out. Those little punks cost us lots of expensive jigs. Another boat fishing in the same area but about 40’ deeper didn’t see any bluefish so we were probably in a migrating school. Triggerfish were there but out competed by seabass and blues. Ran for miles but couldn’t get away from them. The ocean is like a box of chocolates.
You never know what you’re gonna get. Looks like some very nice bsb’s. How deep?
Olde Man Charters
we also found the bluefish in 100’ of water on Sunday…caught several and even foul hooked one in the side with a speed jig…thought I had something BIG until we saw it…didn’t keep any, but all were in the 2-3lbs range I would say…we also never got heavy into the triggers…couple of small ones but the BSBs and porgies were supa thick…

Was a great trip, thanks Jordan and Derek and (other) Andy for everything. G2G Andy we will see you out there soon enough!
yes, big artificial = big bsb and so much easier than dealing with cut bait. No groupers though. Do they leave or go dormant?

they get really lazy this time of year from what I’ve seen. gotta have frisky live bait although it’s probably not worth the effort since all you can do is take a picture with em…

Matt that looks awesome and yes I want it. I kind of wish we stuck it out for a few minutes and got our limits on blues because that dip is sooo good. I was just watching some videos of bluefish attacking pods of menhaden and I wonder if that’s what we stumbled into. Hard to say for sure because they all stayed at least 30’ below us.
I just noticed that every fish in that picture looks so surprised!

Grouper are spawning on the big ledge this time of year. That is why the season closes Jan 1-May 1. It’s because when they are tightly congregated, they are easy to hit.

Those blues will be moving into the artificial reefs in 40-80ft soon. Big ones too. The biggest ones of the year. A 6-8lb chopper is great sport on inshore tackle!
Nicely done. We got into the same thing the other weekend… BSB’s mixed with Blues in about 90’ of water. Cookem up!
I think if that bluefish madness happens again we should fill up the live well those 2-3 pounders, hit the ledge, slow troll and see what happens…

That sounds good and I would have been game on that day but I had a flight to catch

Yes they will. They usually show up there in March. They were our go to fish in early spring on our charter boats for short trips. Guaranteed smiles! Yall can have that smoked fish though:dizzy_face:
For really good non-stop action we would chum them with sinking commercial catfish feed. Get 50 pounds from a farm supply store.
