2 wt?

I do a some creek fishing, and some rare backpack/fly trips in the NC mountains when I can make the trip. I currently use a 4 wt and would call myself an “advanced beginner”. I’m thinking about trying a 6 foot range 2 wt to go after the small spooky wild fish up there on the tighter creeks.

Anyone have any experience with one?

Thanks

I have a friend that has a 6ft, I think its a two or three he loves it but if you hook into anything over 15 inches, you might not get it in …

Stone- I have a Sage SPL (I think) 2wt. That is my rod of choice on small North Carolina waters. I use it on Delayed Harvest waters too. Rod is able to throw the smallest of flies with ZERO disturbance, but can load and cast a nymph as well. Good stuff and real fun to fish. Lots of fun on ponds too…

you will protect your lighter tippets better since the rod will “give” when the line starts to stretch. you’ll love the 2

Looks like I lined up a really good deal on a Hardy Classic Flyweight 6’ 2wt- Christmas gift for myself. I’ll post a report when I get it set up.

I beg to differ on this point… I have a 2wt I use in my pond and I have caught several largemouth in the 3 to 4 pound range and even a catfish that went a little over 3 pounds… If you play the fish right and don;t try to horse them in it is very possible to land ANY trout you will find up that way on a 2wt…

about a 3 lb bass on my 2wt, 2lb tippet. This Bass ate the small bream I had hooked and then the fly stuck the bass

size 16 Crystal blue that landed that bass

Out of the 4 fly rods I have, my 2wt is definately my favorite. I have a 8’ 3 piece TF. I like the extra length and limberness. Almost like a fly reel on a bream buster. I agree with jedi, I have caught several 3 and 4lb bass with it fishing topwater. No problem and allot of fun. Should be no problem catching just about any trout with it.

I had to move up to the rod… I have a few handles that have some gnarly teeth marks on 'em

I’ve missed a “few” bass on small flies. They just don’t hook up on the hard lip. I notice that Nikon’s fish has the fly in the sweet spot! But, I maybe could use a sharper hook?

That sweet spot was pure skill… as the tiny bream was being engulfed and swallowed I gave an expert twist of the wrist, ScottyD showed me how to do it, and stuck that fly exactly where I wanted it… Yeah I know… I am a lucky bass-turd

I’d like to see some pix of some slab shellcrackers you got on that rig! I’ll bet that is one helluva rush battling a 1 lb+ panfish bent over 3/4 of a circle and that drag peelin off! Hot dog!!!

Santa was good to me. Still doing a little research to match a line. The rod/reel balance is awesome. Can’t wait to take it to the Smokies.

Have fun I hope to hit the Cherokee waters in a week or so when I head home … good luck ain’t nothing like a trout on the fly rod …

Nice! that is the one of the sickest mtn rods ever IMHO- nice call too on the ultra-light reel. it’ll place flies super gently…ever fished a furled leaded?

Thanks ScottyD. I’ve been reading up on the furled leaders. I don’t think I have it in me to make them, but I will try it out. Please feel free to give me any advise or recommendations you can. Also, I’m still trying to figure out a line to match.

I wish I could have gone to NC this weekend!

rio trout LT would be my favorite. check out the fiberglass manifesto. Cameron os a helluva nice guy and can steer you towards his recomendation as well. Ive got a few furled leaders from the guys from catskill customs in NY. they have some sick hatches and know their dry fly fushin up yonder. Very cool, EZ pickup, turnouver, and lasts much much longer than standard leaders
