20 Hour Service

Anyone know what is included in a 20 hour service on a new 4 stroke? Wondering if I should do it myself or not.

Oil change and you should check your warranty. To be valid, it may require certified shop. I did mine but I don’t really expect much from a warranty other than design flaws or part failures. Everything is computer now anyway so you’re kind of bound to the dealer unless you got the program.

I would say take this one to certified dealer and then you should be good to do the rest yourself.

Thank’s guys. Sounds like I should let the shop do this one and I can handle most of the other ones.

Exactly what I did with my 90 Zuke

“Living’s mostly wasting time and I’ll waste my share of mine”

One of the biggest misconceptions out there. Be weary of any dealer that tells you that service/maintenance must be performed by them or void warranty. Sure your owners manual will tell you the see dealer for service. It’s a business. But it doesn’t say you must take it to a dealer to maintain warranty.

If you do what the owners manual specifies yourself, just keep the receipts and you will be covered. After just recently being taken for a ride by a local dealer I would recommend that you research dealers in your area before taking your boat. Research sites in addition to this website.

From Yamaha site:

" Will it void my warranty if a non-Yamaha dealership performs the maintenance on my Yamaha outboard?

No, your maintenance can be done by anyone you authorize to do your maintenance. We suggest the use of a Yamaha dealership for service and maintenance due to their experience, knowledge, authorization to perform warranty, and the access to Yamaha’s technical staff and publications. Be aware that if an issue arises from the lack of proper maintenance or service, your warranty will not support that issue. For example, an oil change has been performed on a four-stroke engine. Then, the engine fails due to the servicing agent forgetting to add oil after draining the oil. In this case, the engine will not be covered by warranty.

But by all means, if you don’t feel confident in changing oil, filters, spark plugs etc. take it to dealer.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

I AM A YAMAHA AND A HONDA DEALER
THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT FOR ANY SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED AT A DEALER
IF YOU DO IT YOURSELF, JUST MAKE SURE YOU CAN PROVIDE RECORDS IF THEY ARE EVER REQUESTED FOR A POTENTIAL FUTURE WARRANTY REPAIR.
WE ALWAYS SUGGEST BRINGING IT TO THE SHOP FOR THE INITIAL 20 HOUR SERVICE, AS IT GIVES US AN OPPORTUNITY TO CHECK OVER EVERYTHING, TO MAKE SURE THINGS HAVENT CHANGE SINCE IT WAS ORIGINALLY RIGGED, OR THAT SOMETHING WAS DONE INCORRECTLY DURING THE INITIAL RIGGING.
A 20 HOUR SERVICE IS $99 PLUS PARTS

Thanks for the reply Chris. Any idea on turn around time for the 20 hour service and to look at the Minn Kota trolling motor? Hoping to not loose to much fishing time. Thanks again and look forward to seeing you soon.
