I am looking at a 26ft boat with two 200 hpdi egines they are 2002 year models does anybody run these egines and if so any problems and how much oil do they burn.
Call Tony at Hanckel on Daniel Island. We’ve been talking with him about the 300 hpdi’s, the recalls, etc. He’ll fix you up!
the 200 HPDI is a great motor
they burn way less oil than a carbed 2 stroke at cruise speed. however, at high rpms, they still burn 50:1
I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com
I like my 2001 200 HPDI a lot so far. It burns at least 50:1.
Coming from 2 stokes with carbs and a few 4 strokes in my experience, I feel like the filters and lifter pumps, etc. on this motor are pretty expensive. You must keep them replaced on schedule and run good fuel and oil (not cheapo oil) though.
Mine gets 3.5mpg pushing an older 21 Mako, which is a fairly heavy boat for a 21. With 300lbs of ice and 4 guys, the motor gets around 3mpg offshore without tabs yet.
The 150 and 200HP HPDI’s are supposed to be excellent motors. You’ve got to keep all the stuff on them maintained and use high quality oil though. No shortcuts.

Pretty much bulletproof except the 250 which was a disaster.
They are very torquey and get comparable fuel mileage to 4 strokes.
