ok today out on the water i was at 3/4 trottle and then the motor cut back but the rpms stayed the same so i pulled the trottle back first thought was i spun a prop hub so i got back to the ramp only being able to go 5kts. Got it back to the house an pulled the prop and some of the rubber in the prop was melted so after that i pulled the drain for the LU and i found the problem there was metal chips and chunks on the plug and metal shavings while it was draining the oil. next i pulled the bearing assemly and the gears are chipped bad and some teeth are broke off. Now my Question what would cause this to go out? and how hard is it to pull the gears and re align them together and where is a good place to buy the parts thanks again for any reply.
And once again what would cause this to happen? i just replace the gear oil and there was a little water not much at all and there was not metal on the plug thanks
unless you have all the special alignment tools, and dial indicators, this is not a do it yourself project
it would be much cheaper and faster to find a good used or rebuilt gear case
Not smething one would really want to do oneself. A lot of precise measurements that need to be taken to ensure a proper rebuild of the lower unit. Unless one is a machinist or has training in rebuilding them it will drive you absolutely nuts. I did one on a old Johnson years ago, it worked out ok but never again! Definitly something best left to the experts or look around for a used one.
Thanks yall for the replies. whistlingdixie posted a thread bout lower units and was asking bout Sterndrive engineering they have lower units with a 3year warranty and the price is 795.00 thats a great deal anyone every dealed with them? thanks again
f. Now my Question what would cause this to go out?
Good happy answer: Impact with something solid.
Sad unhappy answers: defective gear, metal fatigue, plastic deformation, slow grinding shifting wearing the gears, pinion gear getting whacked by improper shifting, bad repair job from prior repair, water in the lower unit causing failure… just to name a few.
