I have found a pin hole leak in the gas tank at the bottom seam on the aft center line. Any recommendations out there on who i should take the tank to to have it welded on. Its an aluminum tank, i got a price for a new one at $650 and 3 hours labor at $90 an hour. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all.
So the tank is 13 yrs old? If you have a pinhole in one place, then you more than likely have other areas that are bad also so you might just end up chasing a dragon. If you have the tank repaired, I would at the very least have someone do an inside inspection of the tank, check all the welds by magna-flux (http://www.ehow.com/how_6600930_use-magnaflux-dye-penetrant.html) and have the tank pressure tested.
And if someone has the ability to ultra-sound the tank for wall thickness, this will tell you if you have any thin-walled places in your tank waiting to leak.
All in all if you can afford a new tank, the peace of mind that knowing you have a good tank with no leaks when your 40 miles offshore or just even inshore would be worth the price. What you would pay to have the existing tank properly inspected and repaired may even run close to a new tank install.

I agree with Mike, replace it. It’s too big a risk. I don’t know of a welder who would assume the liability of repairing it.
Edit: What size tank is it? I just bought a 48 gal and it was $505 from www.speedytank.com

Larry,
Thanks for that link. They just quoted me 390 plus shipping and can have it made in 5 days. I think i will go this route, safer is better!

Speedytank coats the tank with a very heavy gray epoxy coating at the factory, saving you the trouble:smiley:

No problem. 390 is a lot better than 650! I just bought my 4th tank from them and they are jam up to deal with. Fast, accurate and very high quality. This one is for a 20 year old Grady White and they duplicated it perfectly. It comes pressure tested and with all USCG stickers needed today. First class outfit.
They usually ship in 3 days from order, but they seem to be a little behind for spring. It took about 10 days to get this this one to the door.
