2002 Yamaha F115

Yesterday after returning to the dock from fishing the morning when I shifted into neutral my engine made a noise that did not sound good at all. Kind of sounded like the noise you hear when you try to start a car that is already running - but not quite as loud. When I shifted into forward the noise went away…back into neutral it returned…into reverse it went away.

Any ideas on what this could be? Before I bring it into a mechanic, wanted to see if anyone has ever ran into this before.

Thanks

starter switch was hanging in start position, if it happens again, turn the switch back a little, it should prevent it from happening, I’ve seen it a bunch with OMC key switches, they hang up all the time. When you put it in gear, the neutral safety switch was preventing the starter from engaging, when you put it back in neutral the starter started engaging

Thanks Spareparts - that makes sense. What exactly do you mean by turning the switch back a little?

when you release the switch from starting the engine, it should spring back to the run position, if it doesn’t spring back all the way, it stays in the start position, just turn it a little counter clockwise, if the engine shuts off, you went too far, just start it up again. You will probably need to replace the key switch with a new one

Finally got around to getting the issue fixed last week. Spareparts was right on the money…needed to have the key switch replaced - ha been running fine since. Thanks for the advice Spareparts.
