We were running offshore Saturday and everything was going great, smooth seas and making way at 35 mph. We made it about 35 miles out and starboard motor alarm goes off. Shut motors down, checked what I could and seen or felt nothing hot, cool water stream coming out of pee hole. Fired them back up and run about 3 more miles when it goes off again. We putted over to some bottom #s and let the kids fish. I let the motors idle while we bottom fished and it ran for about 45 minutes before alarm goes off. Any ideas what could cause this?
Just some things to think about, how long since the water pump been changed, check your thermostats for proper operation and check the poppit valve. I had a 80 hp that started alarming and it turned out to be scale and salt build up in the cooling passages even though I would flush after every salt water use.

If I’m posting, its because I’m sitting here at work, dreaming about fishing.
if it happened on plane IT COULD EASILY BE A WATERPUMP OR THERMOSTAT.
IT WOULD BE UNLIKELY TO BE A PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE SINCE IT HAPPENED AT HIGHER RPM’S

Thanks guys for the input.
Chris, in you expert opinion, would the exhaust corrosion problem be a possibility at high rpms or only at idle?

Had a lot of thermostat clog up in the past!
Dropped lower unit and checked water pump. Impeller “looks” fine but looking at it closely, the inside part that spins with drive shafts spins but impeller does not. It has separated. I think this might be the problem.

It’s my understanding that if you look up there with a flashlight when you drop the lower unit, you can see if there is corrosion damage. Might want to ask Chris!

Pro tip right there. It will overheat on muffs with the pressure relief valve bad…
When I can’t fix my motors anymore, I’ll be coming to see you.
The corrosion problem is at lower RPM’s. Trust me. I fixed 2 with that problem. Yamaha will sell you the parts cheap enough, but you still gotta pay the labor. 2.5k a motor.
Redstripe, I have little white specs in the lower part of the exhaust, but top half looks black (no pitting). Is this good or bad as far as the exhaust corrosion is concerned.
