Going to look at a boat on Saturday that has a 2003 Suzuki 140hp 4stroke. What are some things that I need to look for? I have read that they had an issue with a steel exhaust plug that caused some corrosion issue. Where is it located in the engine? Engine has approx 600hrs so what are some things to look for, never have had a Suzuki.
If its a 4 stroke the they do have a steel plug. There are aluminum replacements though if it hasn’t corroded through yet though. I know the steering brackets like to rust on them. Other than that they are pretty tough. Same as a johnson 140.
Reel Wicked, I am in the process of getting my Suzuki 2004 DF 140 rebuilt now. The most common problem is the corrosion issue were the steel plug is in the engine holder. You can look up where it’s located but as far as I am aware of, it’s hard to tell if it’s corroded from looking at the outside the motor. My corrosion problem occurred in the #4 exhaust port. See if the previous owner changed the zinc anodes regularly and was it used in salt or fresh water. Check the zincs if possible to see what their condition is in, it might give you an idea of the condition and care of the motor previously. Also did they flush the motor after each use. Mine was used all in salt. Fresh water motors haven’t had the problem as bad as salt water boats. For the record, mine ran flawlessly and I was very pleased with it’s performance until the day it went bad. Hope this helps.
