Thanks in advance for any help you all may put forth. As mentioned in the subject, I have a 2004 Johnson 50HP J50PLS which is on a john boat. The motor has a VRO system, that has been running extremely rich and for some reason, I keep losing prime on my fuel supply.
Long story short, in researching a new VRO system I noticed that you can purchase a conversion fuel pump which eliminates the VRO system where I’ll be mixing my own fuel from now on which I am fine with.
Do any of you see a problem with this approach. Also, besides removing the VRO and installing the new fuel pump is there anything else I should have to do?
The current VRO system is wired into the wiring harness. Is there anything I will have to do to bypass or rewire concerning alarms etc.?
The 2001 60HP Johnson I bought used had been modified to remove the VRO before I bought it. They left the original pump in place, capped to oil line and unplugged the sensor wire. A few years later I replaced the pump with the non-VRO pump. I had to modify the mount to make it support the smaller pump and replace one of the fuel lines that was too short but the other fuel and crankcase pressure line connections were pretty much plug and play (I’m going by memory on this, it was 5 years or so ago).
If you are losing bulb pressure, you may want to verify the fuel line and bulb are in good shape.
DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE NON VRO PUMP, THEY ARE ALMOST THE SAME AMOUNT AS A VRO PUMP $350
YOU NEED A 3 NIPPLE OLD SCHOOL FUEL PUMP. ABOUT $90, AND YOU HAVE TO BE A BIT CREATIVE TO GET IT TO MOUNT TO THE BRACKET, AND YOU CAN JUST UNPLUG THE VRO HARNESS.
