2005 Johnson 150 having a slight problem. Help plz

I bought the boat about 3 months ago for $7,000 from a police officer I work with. Boat is a 1998 20ft Hoog flatts boat that is in excellent shape and has all the options: trim tabs, hydraulic jackplate, polling platform, 2 push poles, minn kota 24v co-pilot trolling motor, tandem axel alluminum trailier ect… The motor is a 2005 Johnson 150 2stroke. The motor only had 12hrs on it when I bought it and the boat had been sitting for 2 years before I bought it. So Took it and had the carbs totally rebuilt and a general tune up on the motor. I also had the VRO disconnected because they are famous for going out so I am mixing my own oil at 50:1 which equates to 2.56oz per gallon. Well I have taken it back to the shop twice because at low RPM’s (at an idle or when it is off) it loads up with fuel or something. It cranks up fine when you first get to the landing but if you shut it off or let it idle for a while when you put it back in gear it bogs out. If you high idle it for a few minutes it clears up and you can go again. Also when I run it on the hose I notice a black oil slick on the patio that appears to be unburnt oil. It doesn’t display the problems at home on the hose because there is no backpreassure on the engine. I have tried putting one step hotter plug in and that helped a little bit but did not fix the problem. Everytime I take it to the shop they blame it on the ethanol but there is no way that the ethanol is causing this problem. I even put the stabil ethanol treatment in everytime i put gas in it and I have a fuel water separator. I have also tried runnning various types of oil but I do not run cheap oil. I have also tried all 3 grades of fuel and nothing helps. When I bought the boat he was still running double oil so I thought that might have been the problem but I have been through many tanks of gas since then. And yes I have changed the plugs about 3 times since then. I have also replaced the fuel pump and the primer bulb. I am a pretty good mechanic but I can’t figure this one out.I mean its not

A sticky choke? A sticking or poorly adjusted float? Maybe check your low speed carb adjustment, if there is one. If you have a any carb drain plugs, open them up and let some fuel through. Sometimes it will let any small trash in the carb flush out without having to remove the whole unit.

have you tried going to 40:1 oil instead of 50:1

No one knows if YOU are THE village IDIOT or not until YOU open your mouth and speak!!!

I was thinking the float too but they have supposedly been through the carbs twice and say they are good to go. I was thinking about leaning it out to 40:1 but wasn’t sure how lean I could go before I risk hurting the motor

Wait a minute 40:1 is more oil…that’s not going to work

With 12 hours on the motor …dont understand why you took the “VRO” off.

because it is an 05 and no longer under warranty and it sat for 2 years. But that shouldn’t have any affect on how the motor performs

'Sounds to me like one of two things.

1 - Carb or carbs still aren’t right. What is your idle RPM? Is it correct according to the manual? Your motor is newer than mine, but, there must be an adjustment similar to sync and timing (linkage, not ignition). Has that been checked closely?

2 - Ignition Timing is slightly retarded. Its close enough to idle in neutral, but, not well enough to keep the motor running under minimal load at idle speed.

Getting an oil slick in the driveway is entirely normal. The 50/1 ratio is the max oil needed at full load and max RPM. At any conditions below full load and max RPM, you’re running rich. At idle with no load, you’re running very rich. You will get clearly visible oil in your exhaust and on your driveway.

My motor (admittedly a lot older), had its carbs rebuilt multiple times by two different shops to correct lack of power or loss of power after running well for a few minutes. When it went to the third shop, carbs were rebuilt again and everything was beautiful. After that, I bought the boat and I’ve had to rebuild the carbs myself once due to water ingestion/ethanol crap. Got clean gas and clean carbs and she runs like a top.
