I had an issue with the engine stalling and idling rough in neutral position. I replaced the plugs and then noticed a ticking sound.
From what I’ve read the tick can be an indication of an injector issue or power head about to go. The replacement power head is about $3600.00 and I wondered if anyone can advise how many labor hours would be required from a shop to replace?
Not going to Yamaha just yet and thanks for reading
I probably got ahead of myself not saying my plan is to test compression and then find a certified Evinrude service location to troubleshoot. I was just wondering worst case scenario of a powerhead issue and costing.
I don’t have any idea how many hours are on her. She hasn’t been hooked up to a computer in a few years. It’s a 2007 Etec 150 and thus far the only maintenance has been changing lower unit oil, replace the plugs, and replace the inline fuel filter under the cowling.
I did note the electrode position when tightening the plug.
I ran it Labor Day weekend and it seemed to run fine most of the day. It was missing a little and I noticed more smoke from the exhaust than ever before. The next time I tried to warm it up before going to the ramp, I couldn’t get it to fire without advancing the throttle and even then it would stall when throttling back to neutral. Eventually it wouldn’t start at all.
I changed the plugs and I’m still having the issue with stalling and requiring throttle to start. It isn’t throwing any alarms or populating warning lights on the gauges. I checked for water in the separator and replaced the inline filter.
I know it’s normal to hear a slight tick with the cowling off, but this seemed more pronounced and like I said I’m trying to get an idea of worst case scenario if the power head is going. If the injector is bad my fear is that it’s already done damage.
Flight risk is right on about indexing the plugs! Google it and see if that is not the problem! Good luck!!!
Thanks BoatPoor, but I had noted that the plugs were indexed. I got some advice from Etec on cleaning the exhaust back pressure valve and that has helped slightly. I’m still trouble shooting, but wanted to update on where she is. Thanks again!

Hwy 72 Marine, Linconton Ga. where I purchased it! Have done my 300 hr service and rebuilt fuel system when I picked up a rope in the prop and it swung around and pulled the gas line out of the transom and dropped in the water and pumped the running motor full of water. They have done me a good job and very reasonable and had it ready when they said they would. I have about 200 hours since the accident and now problems to date!
I didn’t mention I use this motor on 2 boats, a 23 CC in the warmer months and a 20’ tri hull Glassmaster with full windsheild in the winter when I do a lot of striper fishing.
I did post on the Etec owners forum and have not been able to resolve the issue. Plugs changed and indexed, cleaned exhaust port, and drained fuel line.
I hooked up an auxiliary can with fresh ethanol free fuel and it ran fine. I tuned it off and started again just like it should. I let it cool down and tried again later and it wouldn’t start again without advancing the throttle. When returning the throttle back to neutral it died. Im at a loss, so any suggestions would be appreciated. I’m going to take it to Cooper River Marine regardless of whether I find a resolution first, but it would be cheaper for me to trouble shoot/fix and just have them hook up the computer for updates and service.
I really wish I could help- sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me, but I am no mechanic, have a lot of crazy ideas and have seen a lot but there are some good mechanics that can help.
I am the proud owner of an etec also, so any conclusion you find is always a good read to me.
That has happened very infrequently in the past, but it has happened. I have a Raycor S3227 water separator mounted in the splash-well (replaced in May '17). I’ve wondered if fuel pressure delivery is a symptom/cause, but I don’t have the equipment to test.
I noticed when trying to start occasionally the tachometer pegged all the way around and a couple times stuck in that position, but the RPM’s weren’t revving high on the engine. I think what was happening is the arm on the started was staying engaged and not retracting once the engine fired.
I have been extremely happy with the engine and planned on taking it to have the EMM updated and whatever service is recommended for the amount of hours on it. Like I said before it would be nice to have the starting issue resolved prior to that to save a little coin.
Thanks to all that have replied.

most common runability issues we saw in the past before we stopped working on them, were computer failures and electric fuel pump failures
check fuel pressure before you do anything else, then start shopping for a Yamaha SHO:stuck_out_tongue:
