2008 Yamaha 150

Headed out of cut yesterday (buddies boat)and started to accelerate. Then we heard a small metal sound, backed off and tried again. Then a larger noisier metal sound and then lost drive, headed back to landing on one motor. Any thoughts to what it could be? Scheduling mechanic to look at. Motor sounded fine.
Thanks ahead of time.

Popped the lower unit

Tall Sail Marine

That’s what it sounds like to me. Good news it is a relatively quick and only moderately expensive repair, better than powerhead issues. Looks like $900 for a rebuilt unit from SEI, then labor to pop it on. Back on the water quickly and after a break-in period you should be good to go. Bummer for sure, but could be a lot worse for a 10 year old motor. Been there.

So, it’s a gear replacement job and probably should do both motors and or just make sure cables are adjusted properly?
Popped lower unit meaning it popped out of gear due to rounded gears?
Thanks.

No, I would say gearing inside was destroyed. They can send the lower unit out to rebuild it or just buy a rebuilt one off the shelf. Think of it as a mini-automatic transmission, there’s a lot going on in there and precision meshing of gears. Just can’t swap out one gear for another. Probably due to lack of or bad lower unit oil or maybe a previous impact event.

Just do the one engine but check the condition of the other motor’s oil and if the prop turns true. I don’t think the cables are at fault unless he’s been having trouble shifting into/out of gear.

Well it was a loose foot oil screw, oil out salt water in.
Need lower unit. Who is SEI?

Ouch. Something so simple…I recently checked my oil plugs, could have been tighter. Glad I checked.

Here’s the SEI site. I’ve used them recently, 2007 150 Vmax. Happy with the product and service.
