I agree Tom. Unless something crazy like 100 degree temps coupled with about a foot of rain they should be good to go. May even see an early topwater bite…wouldn’t that be great.

I’d bet they were schooling somewhere this morning. It was another cool night, I bet temps are 77-78 this morning. I had a freeline out last night just in case. Bait stayed lively but no takers. Most fish were right below 45’, but there were lots of fish from 20 to the surface on the fish finder.
I had a little idle time, so I went and checked on the current data. Leaving out the charts, but here’s the numbers for today, 8/14.
“Bottom” Temp
“Bottom” DO
So, based on 17 years of data, the D0 is right at the 75th percentile mark and the bottom temp is even in a higher percentile than that (in relation to the min temp).
What a difference from last year. Really looks good.
Fish have been fighting hard all summer and bait dying really hasn’t been a problem. Days are getting shorter and nights are getting cooler. Won’t be long before they start schooling.

Yep. I normally give it a break in the middle of Aug. I don’t enjoy catching them when they get lethargic and hit like a gar, but this year is definately different than most. Even if they do go a bit deeper with this upcoming hot weather I wouldn’t think it should matter with the DO being this high and the water being so unusually cool.
I seen that as well today tom and was gonna post about it when I got home. Thought it was weird as well. Top DO dropped almost 3 points overnight. Bottom has been up and down the last week from 1.6-2.3 which is great for this time of yr. But the drop in the upper has me puzzled…may be a water quality issue with “that” part of the lake. Got a report today of fish in other areas of the lake that wouldnt even think of trying this time of yr.
One report had 19 fish all on top water. He was a greenfish guy, guessing they were mixed together in the school. But all were 14-19".

When Steely and I were fishing Friday afternoon/night, right befor dusk we found a large school about 40 feet. All of a sudden fish were busting the top-looked like a buncha shorts but schooling in the big pond this time of year? who’da thunk it?
I saw this too at lunch today. If I remember correctly, the top DO dropped from 6+ to 3 in 24 hours.
I was thinking it may have to do with the rain. Maybe rain is not necessarily high in DO?

After looking at it again, the drop from almost 7 to 3 mg/l looks like it happened from yesterday afternoon until midnight. For whatever reason, the timing definitely seems to correlate with the heavy rains we had yesterday.
I always heard that the rain brought up the DO as well, but it just seemed odd to me how the heavy rainfall seemed to coincide with the falling level. Just an observation…I don’t know enough about it say for sure one way or the other.
As far as calibration goes though, I agree that it is very possible that their equipment may not be calibrated to spec. However, that would be more of an issue with absolute values that are being reported. Even if their equipment is not calibrated to spec, they still measured a > 50% drop in DO level in 9 hours, so I definitely feel like there was some sort of event that caused this to happen.
I’ve always wondered about the calibration of the equipment myself after last year when we were marking fish at depths that had a DO level of 0.0 according to the site.
I seem to have heard that short periods of heavy rain can aerate the surface, but prolonged heavy rain can also cause runoff of lawn chemicals that can ultimately lead to DO depletion. I don’t think this is the issue now and would have no idea of what’s caused the recent drop.
Do you think that the lake dropping has anything to do with it? Seems they are starting the end of summer hydro to make some power and drop the lake level a little earlier than normal this year also.
The lake heard Tim’s turnover tournament was early this year and it’s trying like hell to turn over extra early.

I was thinking that, but wouldn’t dare even bring it up. If it turns over in the middle of Sept I give up.
Heading out tonight, so will see how the fishing is holding up. I’ll report…good or bad. Still just trolling though…not going to have time to get bait.
Taking out a friend from work and his son who just got out of the hospital after months of surgeries and rehab after a horrific motorcycle accident on I95. He’s battling with depression, understandably, but his dad said he’s excited about going fishing. I really hope we have a good night.
