My two cents - the monitors are only a snap shot of what is going on in the immediate area of that location…so a 0 at the monitor site, might not represent what is going on 1/2 mile up the lake…Cloudy weather, rain or not, can lead to falling oxygen levels, because photosynthesis is so important to the addition of oxygen to the water column. The drop looks more dramatic than just cloudy weather, but again that may be an occurrence near the monitoring station. Something is off, if the monitor says 0 and the fish are biting at the reported depth…either the monitor is off or the depth comparison is not valid - depth of monitor not correct or the depth sounder is inaccurate.
Talked with woody last night at the MSC meeting. He said that the new sceg licensing agreement is to start pulling water from the top versus the 50-80’ depth like previously. Although it isnt finalized yet thats where they pulled water from.
I went and checked the water flow through the dam on those days we seen the top DO drop, and sure enough they ran a good amount of water those days. Normally that would cause a drop in the lower DO. Guess it was new to us all to see the top drop.
Good to have a guy on the inside…thanks woody.

So, what you are saying is that’s why the do dropped up top and not down the water table at the 60-80 foot? Would make more sense that way. I’m a little slow as you know, trying to keep up as best I can!

Very good, no more sucking all of the oxygen right below the thermocline. Lake Murray is lucky to have the midlands striper club, it is much more than some guys hanging out and fishing. Although that is definitely part of it.

What people tend to forget is we are talking about 2 different fisheries. The lake which is put and take and the lower saluda which has natural occurring reproduction.
I was always under the impression they pulled water from the lower end to make sure the river fish were takin care of while they seek summer refuge in the cold water coming from the lower thermocline of the lake.
Guessing all this will sort itself out. They cant just pull from the top all summer long or the saluda will turn into a sauna being so shallow then dumping 70-85 degree water into it. Killing the striper and trout and probably other things. They need to find a happy medium to help both fisheries.

Maybe one of the MSC guys that worked with the re-licensing will chime in. But I think there is only one intake that happens to be right where the thermocline sets in late summer. I would imagine the surface water they are pulling is mixing with deep water. DNR has worked way too hard trying to restore the Sante Cooper stripers to sabotage it.

Was looking around on my lunch break today at last years data. I had totally forgot that the turnover came super early last yr. Sept 28/29th to exact. Looks like it turned when top and bottom were around 70 degrees and of course wind and other water disturbances. Could we see it turn in the next 2 weeks with these 40-50 degree nights?
Heres to Hoping it does…lol…fingers crossed. Or We may be in line for a normal turn (early Nov) hard to tell. I like watching these charts this time of yr. …

Is there any chance of catching anything tomorrow? Not familiar with turnover but would love to get on the water tomorrow afternoon.

Chip,
I am not sure it did turnover. It looks to me like a “false turnover” which has happened a couple of times in the past 10 years. Look at the current dissolved oxygen at the bottom. It went from 7.6 ppm on Sunday, down to 1.2 ppm today.
I think the fishing is going to be really tough in the next few weeks. I expect the fish are really confused with the changes in water temperature and dissolved oxygen.
