I don’t own one myself but I have a neighbor that does. He loves it. Flat shooting, accurate and zero recoil. His is a deer killing machine, shoots every one of them in the eyeball and scrambles their brains. It’s too light for me for deer but his results are 100% to date. It’s a PITA to handload for though, stuff is just so small.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Thanks. It’s for Yotes upstate. I’ve had 2 Mini-14’s and they won’t hold a zero…thought I’d up the ante. Hornady 32 gr V-max is 43$ for a box of 50. That’s what Les Baer recommends and sights their .204 in with.
John
Mini-14 to a Les Baer is quite the upgrade! How far are you shooting? I would imagine the .223 would have enough power to make most shots in SC and a heck of a lot cheaper ammo. Just get a more accurate rifle than the mini-14.
Or a .243Win with some 55-70grn varmint loads. Almost as flat shooting, more downrange energy and less susceptible to wind. The .204 is like the .17hmr where wind is concerned at distance shooting.

How about a the original wild cat, .257 Roberts, in the .257 Weatherby Magnum?
…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!
I may be wrong but isnt it illegal to hunt deer with anything less than a .22 cal? Im almost certain the handbook states .22 cal or larger for deer.
I have a question: In the hand book it says that on WMA land, 22 rim fire or less for a Coyote…what about on Privite land? That’s where I hunt. Duckcommander…it’s a 1500 acre farm. There are some fields 500+ yards across and there is a powerline right away that seems to go forever. I just want a one of a kind weapon like a Les Baer that one day I’ll hand down to my son. Not that a les Baer can’t be bought by anyone, but just want him to have something special from his dad.

On private land you can kill them with a cannon or a BB gun, doesn’t matter.

Sounds good. Thanks for the clarification salty. Irobalo, ive never used a .204 ruger so I cant give any helpful input. Im very familiar with .308 however and can tell you its performance is amazing on game. Hardly any recoil plenty of power, extremely accurate and its available in many ar platforms. Might want to check that one out too especially if the rifle is going to be used for large animals like deer and hogs.

Yes, they do have a .308 that they sell as well. I have 3 rifles that I use for deer hunting…a very flat shooting 7 mm SAUM, 30-06, and 30-30., so I’m looking for something to varmmit hunt with as well as just have some fun with. The .308 is the caliber that they use as a sniper rifle…where I am located right now. I’m pretty sure they could drop you at a 1000 meters with what they have.

Try a 6.5x55 or 260rem. It has the best ballistic coefficient you can find. It also packs quiet a punch with little recoil.
I own a Remington 700 classic in .257 Roberts, and it is the best deer rifle I have ever had. I shoot Hornady 117 BTSP, and I have stoned every deer I have shot with it. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.

If you’re ever wanting to change it up a little, try this round. I shoot them in a Ruger #1, same stoned results.
I have a .204 in a savage. Very fun little bullet I like to shoot crows with it pretty good “poof” factor. I also shoot a .223 using Barnes Varmint Grenade 36 gr bullets loaded by black hills. Those Bullets are just silly, they expand inside a grape and vaporize small targets but won’t penetrate more that 6-8 inches so if you shoot a yote you will not get an exit wound. But if you shot it in the head it would be a mess. They also make the Varmint grenade in 243/6m as well but I haven’t shot it .
In the .204 you have to clean it a lot I have noticed it is dirty.

Hard to beat 5.56/.223 for what you are doing, I’d say the issue is the platform, not the bullet. There are known accuracy issues with Mini-14s. If you like the rifle, check into having a new quality barrel fitted to your Mini-14.They can be made sub MOA But honestly, you could probably build an AR-15 for the same amount of money it would take to get your Mini 14 to shoot as good as an AR right now. If you are taking shots approaching 1000 yards, look at the .224 Valkyrie. Uses the same AR platform. In addition to 5.56 on an AR-15 platform, you can go 6.5 Grendal, 6.8 SPC, 224 Valkyrie, and 300 Black out. ON the AR-10 platform, you can go .308, .243, 6.5 Creedmore, and probably a couple more that I’m not aware of.
