Thinking of putting one on a 15’ Jon boat that has a 15 2 stroke on it now. The 15hp 2 stroke was great on a 14’ x 36" jon boat but is sort of slow on the 15’x 42" The 15 is certainly not overpowered and I wonder if the 20hp 4 stroke will be fast enough. Does any one have this set up and what do you think of it?
I had a 25 4 stroke yam on a war eagle 1542 and while it was quite and reliable it was slow and had poor performance compared to a 25 mer 2 stoke which was a screamer.
I have a 1542 Alumacraft with a Yamaha 25 four and acording to my GPS it goes 32 with just me and around 27 with it loaded.
Thanks for responding I am being told by several good people that the 20hp will actually outperform the 25 due to the large weight difference. I would like to have first hand reports on the adequacy of the 20 hp. I was told that the 1542 War Eagle with the 20 hp ran 26 on a GPS but that was wide open.
we just rigged a yamaha 20 on a 1642 seaark and it performs fine
its not a speed boat, but it planes off and runs good with 2 adults
I just bought a Yamaha F25 for my War Eagle 1542. I personally wouldn’t want any less power than the 25. GPS says bumping 30 with just me in it. I’ve been told that the F20 and F15 have the same powerhead but the 25 has it’s own. FWIW.
I replaced a 25hp evinrude 2 stroke “same weight” as the yamaha 20 hp 4 stroke with a 25 hp Yamaha last year, the top speed was 3 mph faster with the new 25 hp, it is alot heavier motor and my boat wasn’t affected much by the weight differance is about 65" wide yours might be a nother story being 42" wide, also the transom may not take the added weight for too long before cracks show up.

Thanks for the responses. Chris have you had a chance to compare the 25 vs the 20 on the same boat?
not personally, but SeaArk has, and a 1542 with a 20 runs top end 25mph and the 25hp runs 29mph
