Is it just me or do you guys think the size limit at lake murray is backwards ? I think there should be a slot limit or no size limit , and the creel limit should be reduced to 2 or 3 at the most !There is hardly ever a fish over 21 inches released only the one’s under 21 in. , it’s a fact that murray can grow big fish if only they could grow up .What do you guys think ? I think if we do not change something we are going to end with a lake full of 20 in. stripers , which is what we are close to now!
The problem is the fish kill every couple years. Before the fish kill two summers ago I had no trouble catching fish over 10#s.
so in your opinion Steely, the fish kill , killed all the big fish?Do you not see that it’s gonna take along time for the fish to come back if we only take biggest of the class and release the small one’s? Just does not make sense to me !
Yea i would like to see a change in the limits too even though I do not keep any fish. But like steely said the last two years have been good numbers but all small fish with a few bigger fish.
There are some big fish around, but nothing like before. And yes, it will take a while for these small fish to get over 10#s.
don’t know if you guys realize it but there is not a size limit at greenwood. they take the smaller ones out and that gives the larger ones more of a chance to grow. i guess? is that how it should work or what?
maybe that gives the larger ones more bait to scavenge with less competition.
Talked to Richard the other day…a 28lb came out last monday I think along with a few 15-20 lb fish before the monsoon came in. At least there is hope !

I think it will be fine as is. If anything lower the limit since the pressure is high on Murray.
Any of you guys know anyone who has a bait tank for sale? I have an older cuddy with no livewell, want a charcoal, or cotton filter tank for Menhaden saltwater. Call Don 704-309-5171, or PM me. Thanks, and how about Stripers around Charleston, Cooper, or Harbor? Anyone know about the fisherie there?
“The big one’s still swimming, let’s go.”
I sent you a pm about a bait tank. There was a guy who used to post on here named willy. He used to fish the rivers for striper. He used to get some big ones. He changed his screen name, I’m not sure what it is now.
mac daddy; check the classifieds. sometimes they are on there.

75% of the females don’t reach sexual maturity until they’re 5 years old, or about 23 inches long.
People keep stripers that meet the regulation size because they’re permitted to do so. However, truthfully, it’s dumb and shortsighted to do so if you want to keep a viable striper fishery going.
Santee striper fishing declined dramatically first because of fishing pressure and some reduced water flow, then the hydrilla eradication program really hurt. Now, fishing for largemouth bass and crappie is suffering there, as well. Murray may very well wind up suffering the same fate.
The only solution for it is release all you catch in the short term. If the water’s warm or the fish are deep, the survivability of those you release will be in question, so it really limits what you can do.
The State Legislature and the local governments surrounding Murray, Marion, and Moultrie need to get on the ball and understand the financial impact that these lakes bring to the state and the local communities. Killing off grass has hurt every single lake that has had a hydrilla eradication program. If they continue letting Santee Cooper Power and SCE&G dictate killing off vegetation, the fisheries in all three lakes could basically co
Maybe the should go to some sort of limit like snook with a season and let you keep two or three in a 18-21 slot and one over. There for allowing the larger breeding fish to breed and grow and helf form a wild population base of fish and not be so dependent on the stocking program.
I live in Charlotte, near Lake Norman, the 21" rule KILLED our lake, no more big fish, and the small population overcrowded, which took all the bait away from the few big fish left. Now, 2-3lb. fish are all you normally catch, unless you are very adept at Striper fishing, and most big fish are caught at night, when the small fish do not feed, daytime Stripers are full, and not feeding, as far as the big fish go. That’s a pro tip from one who has experienced for years what you guys are now experiencing, fish late night at the tailrace below the dams…Thanks for the replys on the bait tank.

i agree 100% carolina boy , macdaddy if we do not change something soon , we’re gonna end up like Santee and Norman . The lakes in Tenn don’t have aany size limits except for the few that have a trophy fishery and they have plenty of big fish and most of the fishermen up there promote catch and release ,but keep the smaller good eating size fish if you want keep some .We on the other hand only release the small fish and keep the bigger fish .
mac daddy, you’re right about LKN, but a bassfishing buddy just got a 10 pounder on a jerkbait out of Davidson creek, so there are some nicer fish. During the summer, there is no size limit on the lake to keep from killing them all. Two fish any size and you’re done, time to go catfishn. Striper fishin on LKN has humbled me the last few trips. Oh, and are you a MAC(swimclub)daddy or just scottish?
King Mackerel daddy…Saltwater man, primarily, but Striper and King Mackerel very similar fish, trolled the same way. Ithought about trying my king stuff on the Striper, but they are more particular than the KM. Striperskiff, Striperking, and some others are planning to join our new KM club in Charleston; solely for beginner and novice KM fishermen only. Membership will be limited to 50 or so, if you guys PM me soon, I also would like to start a Striper club in Charleston, and get that fisherie on the map. There are some locals who catch Stripers most of the year around, just not well known. Any interest in a Striper club in saltwater, guys?

Not enough doing it to know. They’re here right now, in Bushy Park, but usual 17"er’s, I do believe we have a fiahery, but saltwater fishing is so simple compered to freshwater, Stripers are left out of the plan. Hope I can get that changed this year, but it’ll be slow going for awhile, mostly cold water fishing, whwn not too much going on elsewhwere, we’ll see…Santee fish have to be getting through, at least some of them, with freshwater getting too size restricted, you may see saltwater Striper fishing coming back sooner than later…
“The big one’s still swimming, let’s go.”
good to hear. Love striper fishing, think it would be fun to do a little saltwater fishing for them too. compare difficulty of freshwater to saltwater striper fishing and everything
