I enjoy these threads. As a matter of fact, I think I’ve made at least two which were VERY similar over the past 7 years.

Have you ever been offshore?
Take baby steps! Gain experience by going with friends with bigger boats if possible! Gather as much safety gear as possible! File a float plan!!! Watch the weather!!!
I have been out 75 miles past the rocks in a bay boat, and around 85 miles out in my 20’. It is all in what you are comfortable with. You have to make sure you and your crew know the risks that you and your crew will be taking. Yes, it can be done. Just be smart and use your head!!
It would be nice to have a much bigger boat though!
If only that money tree in my back yard would start producing some green!! ![]()

(X/2 * y) * .90 = Range
X= Fuel capacity in gallons
y= mpg
90%= Safety fuel consumption factor
Warning: The above formula does not factor in weather. It is the operators responsibilty to pick his or her days.
Disclaimer:
BTW I was kidding about the formula. Do not attempt this unless you have done it for years. I have heard about people reading things off the web and then putting their crew in danger. DO NOT DO IT.
Looks like you already know what type of bait to use. Good Luck

Time of year enters into “how far” decisions for me. There is much less traffic in winter to render assistance should I have a problem, so I’m less comfortable going long distances in my 22’. Summer eases the pucker somewhat since there’s more immediate help available most places I’d go. I figure I can’t swim in from 5 miles, so 30 miles doesn’t bother me at all if the wx is good enough to make the ride bearable. How far is something you’ll have to decide for yourself once you find out how the boat performs in different sea conditions. More importantly, you’ll know what your average fuel burn is, and can plan accordingly. … ![]()

I have had that same boat for a couple of years now and was wondering that same question when I got mine. I had always spent my time in the creeks and inlets before this boat so going out in the big water was new too me. Over the last couple of years I have built up my confidence with me and the boat and know take it out frequently up to 20 miles with out a second thought. Of course I keep a close eye on the weather, have safety gear, sea tow membership, and a “spot gps”. This will be my 3rd summer and will probably work my way out alittle farther. I know theres guys that wouldn’t have a problem taking that boat out 50 or 60 miles but I’m not quite there yet, infact might never get there. I think you have to just take your time and get to where you are comfortable while always being safe. Maybe I’m alittle slow at stretching out the distance but I would rather be safe then sorry. The only problem know is I’m enjoying going out there more then I do the inlets and wished I had gotten a bigger boat. I guess my advice would be that the boat can handle it, “in good weather” just make sure you are prepaird for anything and be safe. Good Luck.
Man, I’d never go that far out on a boat without a head on it. I’ve had drop it enough times in the freakin’ harbor.
I’m too much of a noob to have a cool signature. (sad face)

5 gallon buckets and a paper towel work in a “pinch”. Always bring the gatorade with the wide mouth on it for handling business #1 when rollin…[:0]

Get a 5 gallon bucket with a removable lid like a pickle bucket from Sams club. Cut a hole in the lid right up to the edge of the lid itself and hot glue a toilet seat to the lid. Get you some good trash bags like Hefty and line the bucket. The lid with almost snap back on the bucket with the trash bag in place. Way more comfortable than the edge of a 5 gallon bucket on my sensitive backside. And the bucket doubles as a bait, wash, whatever bucket. The lid with the seat will store just about anywhere.

Like someone mentioned in an earlier post, take baby steps and it is all in what you feel comfortable with. I have a 19’ bay that I have taken to Commanche on days where the water is like glass. I don’t feel comfortable going any further than 90-100ft. Once I get past the nearshore reef, my boat feels awful small, but I know that I have the stuff available to get me out of a pinch.
SeaTow or BoatUS is a service that helps put me at ease when going offshore.
