This trip was the first in my new Key West 225 DC. Left out of folly at 4am. Getting out of the stono inlet in the dark for the first time was not a picnic, slow goings.
Like others that have posted, we took a beating only able to make 10-15 knots. Found nice temp breaks in just over 100’ and put out the lines. With in minuets of getting the lines out a King hit the WTFB and we put him in the boat. Got the lines back out and then as the last line was going in, the center went off, nice cow dolphin went into the box. Fishing slowed down as we got into 150-160 feet still trolling toward 226. As we made it out to 226 we turned once and trolled back towards home. The last bull that we cought thought he’d be smart, as we got him to the boat and he saw the gaff, he headed straight for the prop. The driver cut the engine and pulled it up out of the water. The 150lb leader wrapped once around the prop and we thought we’d loose the bull for sure. John managed to use the tip of the rod to unwrap the leader and I gaffed the bull. Once we examined the leader it was cut 80% through by the prop. Pink and hot pink were the favorite colors of the day.
Two of the crew had never fished before but they did a great job.
New boat ran great on her first trip and the Suzuki DF225 sipped on 64 gallons total.
We managed to get 5 dolphin, 1 King and two lost at the boat. One wahoo on the Yozuri plug but spit the hook almost immediately.
