25 HP Johnson is Haunted...Please Help!

A friend of mine has a 1999 or 2000 year model 25 Johnson. It has been running without issue until recently. When riding wide open as you begin to back off the throttle it seems to lose fire and die.

We do not believe this is fuel and or carburetor related. Carb has been rebuilt/cleaned twice to verify. Fuel is brand new and tank has no debris or water. Fuel lines are in good shape. Last night we pulled the flywheel to expose the magneto and everything appears to be fine there also. Obviously plugs have fire until the problem strikes.

Motor will crank and run fine for a while and then when you begin to back off throttle its like it hits an electrical short and completely dies. To restart, you can readjust throttle and it will restart and run fine for a while then die again.

My thoughts are that the power pack is the next logical place to look but we’re open to any other suggestions before forkn’ out the dough for a new power pack.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I had similar issues with a 1993 25 hp Johnson. It turned out to be the kill switch in the tiller. Try jumping the kill switch and see if that solves the problem. It was not difficult to replace.

Hope this helps.
