My 87 25 hp Johnson runs great, everywhere but at idle. I’ve read adjust the screw, adjust the float, spray seafoam, replace the needle, rebuild kit. Adjusting the screw did not fix the problem, what are the next steps?
I got a 97 white cawl for sale if you are interested.

I believe what he meant was that he’s got a 1997 Johnson 25hp with a white cowling for sale.
Nothing but a “SMART-ELLIC”!
sounds like you are in need of a carb rebuild, provided you have good compression.

It has been a well maintained motor with relatively low use. I would have to say that the compression is good. I would like to do the rebuild myself. I have a part number. Where should I get a manual when I start.
if a motor has a bad carb and has been run lean, a low hour motor in good condition can easily have bad compression.
do yourself a favor and make sure, if not, you can do all the carb rebuilds you want, and it wont matter

How can one check compression ??
buy a compression gauge
remove both spark plugs
install gauge in spark plug hole
try and start motor
read number
repeat
should be over 100psi and both cylinders within 15%

I’ve always checked compression by only removing the sparkplug on the cylinder to be tested, then doing the same to another cylinder, not removing all of the plugs. Is this the wrong method? It seems to me with all plugs in, except for the cylinder you’re checking, you would get a more accurate reading, than the motor spinning with no resistance from compression. Just a question? No BS. Scott
tide riders next? 15% of what?
Hey Mixed, I figured it out on my own 15% of each other, Ya got nothin better to do than write smart a}} comments on the internet ? Shallow life!!
Not trying to be a smart a$$. Just seemed like the next logical question in the order of progression! And don’t think I haven’t asked, “15% of what”? just for kicks, you may be able to borrow, or rent a gauge from Auto-Zone, or Advanced, instead of buying one. I’m not trying to create problems, only help solve them! Seeya, Scott

Double up with a double duece up PBR. It helps the meds.
15% of each other
prefer to see 10% or less, but 15 is still workable
if you leave the rest of the plugs in, it is possible to get bogus readings if you have a head gasket leaking between 2 cylinders. besides, when that motor is running, its spinning with alot more force than the starter can provide, even with the plugs out.

Thanks for the reply C.V.
