I have a 25 hp 2 stroke Merc and it is hard to start when cold. And by cold I mean a day or two after running the engine. Its a pull start and runs great after starting. It takes about 20-25 pulls to get going. Anybody else have this problem? I pump the bulb until its hard and pull the choke a few times. Plugs have great spark and the engine has good compression. Fuel, gas tank, and line/bulb are all brand new.
I know this is a dumb question, but do you leave it in the choke position while trying to start it or just pull on the choke a few times and push it back in?
i do a little of both -
I leave mine in the choke position to start. Never takes more than two or three pulls. Might check your in line fuel filter. If it was happening to me I would change the plugs first, see if that did any good, then maybe clean the carb. I am sure Chris V or someone with more technical experience will chime in soon.
Good Luck.
as in clean the carb?
Yes, clean the carb good. Don’t just spray carb and choke cleaner down the throat. Remove it, take float bowl off, check needle seat. I am no expert but say this out of personal experience on a pull start merc

Once a year, I take the screw out of the side of the float bowl of my carb and squeeze the bulb until it flushes the gas (and likely some water and varnish) out of the bowl. Just a little water in the bowl will really make a difference. If there is a bit of crap in the bowl, this might clean it out. It does with mine. I do this with my 15 hp Evinrude and even my 115 Yami. If no change, clean the carbs.

Aren’t we all just a little hard to start when we are cold?

iFly, U may have a point. I have the pleasure of ice fishing in Maine in February. Yep, a little slow waking up, but a good 85 mph ride on a sled after b-fast and the day is ON, oh yea!!!

I’ve been off the coast of Maine in February. I think the state motto of Maine is, “Stay frisky or DIE!”![]()

I know the feeling with troubleshooting. I found this a while back. I realize it’s for a different brand motor but there’s still great small outboard troubleshooting info.
i agree with ceylon.my 35hp 2 stroke evinrude did the same thing until i changed the spark plugs, cleaned the fuel filter and cleaned carb…now when i put it in the choke position and pull it and it hit then take off choke and pull it cranks right up…so try that…good luck…
