What does everyone use for their second anchor? I have a 23 foot CC that with an danforth-style bow anchor. Thinking about getting a second one which I’ll end up using for beaching the boat with the family. A second danforth anchor seems impossible to store. What if I use my current danforth off the stern into the open water, then tied the bow off to the beach using a cajun anchor/stick it pin/grounding rod?
Any better solutions?
I’m sure they are better ways but I use a shorter 4 gallon bucket that I drilled 3/4" holes in both sides about 3" from the top,dig a hole for the bucket and fill the bucket with the sand from the hole and tie to it. I can use the bucket for other stuff in the boat when not needed for an anchor. If you’re leaving the boat for a while you can always bury the bucket, it won’t come out.
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
We have a 20 footer and use a pretty small Danforth/fluke anchor for the beach side and stores in the anchor locker with the big anchor. It’s about the size you would use for a small johnboat. Sometimes we dig it into the sand. If it’s choppy we might wrap it around a plant or something more solid. Never had a problem with it ripping loose.
Not sure if that would work well for a larger boat, but it would be easy to try. Our boat is about 3500 pounds loaded.
Second the small anchor for the beach. big one out deep small one on the beach.
Thanks all! Three Oaks: you store the smaller anchor below your main anchor in the anchor locker. Never thought of that. Does your main anchor line get tangled around the 2nd anchor?
Coast Guard recommends never anchoring on the stern, unless you are a good swimmer! Anchor can pull the stern down and swamp the boat.

Put the smaller anchor and line in a 5 gallon bucket. Joseph69 the USCG says don’t anchor JUST from the stern because its the lowest point on your boat, therefore easiest to take in water. It’s fine to have to have 2 anchors while on the beach, although if you double anchor in serious current you need to he ready to cut oneline off and swing out. The CG also recommends to have 7’ of anchor line for every 1’ of depth you wanna anchor in…

We put a stiff sheet of thick plastic over it, so it doesn’t tangle.
Something I have done this year on my boat to save the tangles is use an electrical cord reel to store your anchor line on and have a D ring on one end. Store it out of the way and keep the anchor and chain together and when ready to deploy attach line and go. It saves tangles and time. When ready to go just wind it up as you pull the anchor.

I was thinking about doing this a while ago, but never tried it. Now I’m gonna try it. Thanks.

What kind of reel do you use (specifically)? Do you keep it in a locker? Do you reel in using this reel, or by hand? Pictures?
Thanks!
we use this type of screw in umbrella anchor on the beach side if its not too strong current or wind.

My redneck engineering was similar. We use a garden hose reel - cheapest thing I could find that I thought would hold up. It is solid plastic so no corrosion issues. I looked at the Elec cord reels but they were not big enough for our 200’ of line. I think it cost about $10.
Same idea as above, a simple D ring to connect and disconnect. The son likes it much better as he is my anchor set/puller and had to get out all the tangles before. He seemed to really like it with about a 2 ft chop and me yelling at him
We used the orange electrical cord reel two each but the hose reel will work as well. I keep the reef anchor and the two reels of line in my orange shrimp basket and my danforth in the anchor locker. The chain stays attached to the anchor and just clip on line as needed.
