I was told that when I pull my boat up to the beach(capers etc…)I should put one anchor on the beach and throw a second off the back. My question is it necessary to throw a second anchor off the back and If I should what kind should I use? I have a 20ft sea hunt and use an 8lb fluke anchor.
Thanks!
The second anchor keeps the stern from washing around and putting the boat on the beach.

my boat is 16’ and on a rising tide sometimes I will just nose into the beach and not put a stern anchor out, especially if the current is not too bad…just pull in the slack every now and then and no worries…on a falling tide I always put 2 anchors out.
animal cruelty sucks…unless his lip hurts cause there is a 1/0 Owner Aki hook with a chinaback stuck in it

two 13lb super hookers would do the job fine…8lbs seems a little light to me

There are many ways to anchor up at the beach. The two anchor method is the most popular. It somewhat depends on the local conditions and how long you plan on being there. Some of the barrier island beaches have really strong current and using two anchors can save you from a long swim. Generally you should anchor stern to the beach with the motor trimmed up. If you are anchoring on a falling tide, be careful. Lots of boats get stranded for a tide cycle at capers as the tide falls. I will usually plan my trips on a rising tide. You can put the stern right on the beach. First get a good hook on the bow anchor and then either motor or pull the stern to the beach and carry the second anchor on to the beach.
I actually don’t use two anchors very often. I usually go to beaches with less current and don’t stay more than a couple of hours. I just anchor off at a safe distance depending on which way the boat swings with the current and swim/walk to shore. If I have stuff to carry (chairs, coolers, etc) I either drop people/stuff off or use a tube to ferry stuff.
Best way to learn is to start conservatively and watch what other people (who seem like they know what they are doing). Good luck.
