Decided to try Bulls Bay again this past Thursday and we got lucky. Managed to dodge most all of the storm systems that were boiling around and also managed to catch this tarpon. Notice the unusual hook set in the top center of the mouth, not the normal corner of the mouth position you would expect with a circle. It was hard to believe that this fish stayed glued on as she jumped 4 times and the hook was not even past the barb. How did we not lose her?
what kind of bait did she eat?
very nice catch.

She dined on a tasty manhaden
That has to be the most intense photo of anything I’ve ever seen on a fishing site lol!!! Awesome!
that is my favorite place to hook them. You don’t have to worry about the leader being anywhere dangerous and you can pull straight down their back and beat them quickly.
Nice fish! The fish gods were looking down on you landing that beast on that hook set for sure.

I cant even get a trout to the boat with that kind of hook set!
Sssssh’s great job!!
CH in your opinion is it OK to lip gaff them and cleat them off in the water along side of the boat for a few minutes while you are measuring, photographing, reviving, etc?

quote:I would rather not no, but as long as its done quickly and without lifting the fish over rails and smushing its innards, its fine i guess. When we did the satellite tagging with BTT, the tagging guy had a locking lip gaff like a caribeaner with a line attached. What lots of people frown upon, is hanging the fish by their jaw and then bringing it all the way into the boat where it can beat itself up or not be held right. Main idea is that great pictures can be taken of the fish being supported by the water boatside.

Hunter would you say that the picture we took above was bad on the fish or is that OK?
Nice fish!
