Yeah, that impeller was not too long from breaking apart.

it was broken apart with missing spokes, and it was pretty bonded to the drive shaft. My cup looked good as did all my bolts, but the gasket surfaces needed some work and the gaskets were pretty deteriorated. picture doesnt really show how crappy they were. especially the one under the mounting plate
Oh yeah, it was way past time. Glad you got it done! I keep a spare and a reminder on my phone to do it every year. For $35 or whatever the kit is it’s a must…

Nice job surwrangler, now that you have done a pump job once, next time it should be a piece of cake…

SURF,
CONGRATULATIONS ON A SUCESSFUL REPAIR.
IF THE PIECE OF THE IMPELLER WAS BROKEN OFF WHEN YOU REMOVED IT, IT WOULD BE WISE TO REMOVE THE THERMOSTAT AND RUN THE ENGINE ON THE EAR MUFFS WITH THE THERMOSTAT OPEN.
YOU WANT TO TRY AND MAKE SURE THAT PIECE ISNT STUCK IN A WATER PASSAGE CREATING A HOT SPOT IN THE MOTOR.
MDADDY, THERE IS NOTHING NEW ABOUT PRESSURE RELIEF ASSEMBLIES.
EVINRUDE WAS USING THEM BACK IN THE 70’S
MERCURY WAS USING THEM IN THE 80’S
YAMAHA HAS BEEN USING THEM SINCE THE 80’S
NOT SURE BEFORE THEN, AS I HAVENT EVER WORKED ON STUFF OLDER THAN THAT.
OUTBOARD WATERPUMPS CREATE JUST ENOUGH WATER PRESSURE AND VOLUME AT LOW RPMS.
AT HIGH RPMS THEY GENERATE WAY MORE WATER THAN THE MOTOR CAN USE.
IT HAS TO GO SOMEWHERE.

As usual, you’re correct. I’m just used to it being part of the thermostat system and not having to buy a shop manual for every different type motor to find the “poppet valve”.
I’m from the school of keep it simple…less problems to fix. Thanks for all of your information.
Dockman, I had a 90hp Evinrude that wouldn’t pee if ran in a barrel. Back the trailer down a ramp far enough to cover the lower unit and it would pee every time. Had to use the muff to flush at home just to make sure engine stayed cool.
