2stroke 90 yamaha overheating when flushing

ran my new to me 08 yamaha 2-stroke yamaha 90 the other day. it ran great for 3hrs from idle to 5500rpms. no complaints no problems. get the boat home to clean and flush and after about 1 minute of flushing the motor the overheat alarm comes on??? Anyone have anything like this happen? i tried squeezing the muffs over the intake as tight as possible but same thing. quit it as i didnt want to damage the motor, since it was peeing HOT water. as i said motor ran great in the water for several hours??? could just be a burned out impeller but figure that it would have acted up on the water if that was the case. all opinions welcome.

Try taking off the louvered inlet covers and running it on the muffs again! The covers only have 1 screw, holding them on!

use a 55 gallon drum instead- if it still overheats you need a new impellor and possible a water pump

How strong was the “pee” stream. I have a 2-stroke 70 and it has a good steady stream when run on muffs (just ran it today). If it is weak, I’d do what dockman said and check the impeller.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?

This is what I use!

ok will try a couple of those things and report back. not opposed to replacing impeller just seems weird that it works on water but not on muffs.

I have this same engine and mine overheated twice last Week while on vacation. It had never done this before. Each time, it ran fine with no problems once it cooled down. I ran it every day for 6 days and it only overheated twice. The pee stream was good. I started investigating when I got home and found a bad thermostat. It had some salt deposit around it and would only partially open. You may want to replace yours. Thermostat and gasket is cheap and much easier to replace that the water pump.

I’ve got the exact same tank that Easy has, works great , also have a 150 gal that i use for live bait !!!

Thermostat sticking, or needs water pump/impeller badly. Is the tell tale stream peeing hard or just trickling?

Go ahead and spend less than $100 each year to replace both and never have to worry. Quick and easy way to avoid any expensive trouble!

Poppet Valve:

http://www.pensacolafishingforum.com/f23/90-hp-yamaha-help-please-133112/

The poppet valve develops pressure at low water pressure on the muffs but works when the foot is submerged a tank/water.

Another fine design from outboard engineers.

ALL OF THE THINGS LISTED ARE PART OF THE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE REQUIRED BY AN OUTBOARD, 2 STROKE AND 4.
REPLACE THE WATERPUMP, THERMOSTAT AND PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE.
THE MOTOR IS 7 YEARS OLD AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS NEED TO BE DONE.

MDADDY,
POPPET DOES NOT BUILD PRESSURE AT LOW RPMS.
IT WORKS LIKE THE PRESSURE RELIEF ON YOUR WATER HEATER.
IT SIMPLY OPENS TO RELIEVE EXCESS PRESSURE AT HIGH RPMS.

picking up water pump/impeller/gasket kit tomorrow at hanckle. hopefully report back tomorrow afternoon with results one way or another. thanks for all the input folks.

when you have a problem with the install- come back on here and ask the hanckle mechanic for advice on how to fix it.- Chris provides FREE advice that costs many thousands of $$$ to learn- you can support him by buying parts from him if he is reasonably priced instead of slapping him in the face with the hankle comment.

I’m not saying that Hanckle is not a good dealership, but you don’t see their staff here giving free professional advice on how to fix your motor.

Good Luck with the repair.

IF THE POPPET VALVE IS “STUCK” OPEN…THE WATER PRESSURE ON MUFFS CAN’T DEVELOP…

OVERHEATS…WITH THE FOOT IN THE WATER…BACK PRESSURE FROM SUBMERSION…IS ENOUGH TO CREATE ENOUGH FLOW. JUST MY OBSERVATION ON 3 FAILED POPPET VALVES ON 3 DIFFERENT ENGINES.

THAT DF50 I REBUILT HAD A BAD POPPET VALVE…CRACKED THE HEAD WITH MY FRIEND FLUSHING IT…ALARM DIDN’T WORK…

ONE MORE “RECENT” “IMPROVEMENT” IN OUTBOARD MOTOR DESIGN…MORE TO GO WRONG!!!

That’s not fair. He didn’t come here asking for a mechanic, and you don’t know his reasons for using Hanckel. Maybe he lives in the hood behind them, maybe he has no way to get to North Charleston, etc…certainly not worth you calling him out.

And, Chris didn’t offer “professional advice on how to fix the motor,” he said “replace the WP, Therm, and PR valve.” He didn’t give step by step advice, he just reiterated what we and the rest of the internet have said.

If I took wrong, then fine, but it sure seems like an unfounded and uncalled for jab.

ok folks so had the time today to attempt this project and it was as advertised, not too bad. my impeller/water pump housing/gaskets however could have looked better , but Hanckle got me fixed up, and i was able to get it all reinstalled, apparently correctly, b/c the motor actually peed nicely and the overheat alarm did not sound after installation. So, assuming the problem was not symptomatic of some other issue it looks like I am good to go. here are some pics of the parts that needed replacing, and cleaning. Thanks to all who offered input. Its great when CF actually works as intended rather than a bragging/bashing board. cheers.

PS Chris V has offered good advice and has earned future business from me when i come to a point that i cannot pass with the motor or when i need a trolling motor installed (hopefully soon)…And yes Hanckle is like 2 miles from my house Dockman.

good on you fixing it yourself- that’s the real way to save money and know your boat/motor inside and out
