3-12 snapper and aggressive sharks

I’m curious. When you shoot those big’uns, how long do they drag you around before you can put them on your stringer.

Also at 100’, what kind of bottom times are y’all putting in?

/I believe I’d invest in a quick-snap release buckle for my stringer, just in case Mr. Toothy takes a serious interest in the goodies.

//Once did a pleasure dive off Pensacola and a guy was spearfishing that dive. A 12 foot bull shark aggressively stole his goodie bag after he had to cut it loose with his knife. Good times.

Shot location is everything. You hit them in exactly the right spot in the head and they die instantly, shoot them close to the tail and be ready for a long ride. Some fish are worse than others. Cobia and AJs are pretty bad. Small kill area and TOUGH fighters. This is one of those things that separate “good” from the “great”. It takes me a couple minutes from shot to stringer. I am sure these guys can do it VERY quickly.

Bottom time is around 30 mins on nitrox. Time is limited you have to make the most of it as these three do.

You need to do everything possible to keep the shark from getting your fish. If you make it easy he will assoicate you with food and keep coming back. They don’t need to associate us with an easy meal better to associate us with an A$$ WOOPEN.

Greg1, I did not know they were protected. But if one charges me… well… uh… lets just say I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. I respect Rob for tring not to harm the shark but have no problem telling you that he is a better man than me.

Nothing is protected if your life or limb is threatened. The only difference is that you aren't allowed to pluck it from the water for pictures.

I’d probably laugh all my air watching someone spear a huge snapper and go for a ride. As long as it wasn’t me and the fish couldn’t take you deeper or to the surface too fast.

That was a huge bug. I caught and chased a

/One more question about the big fish: are they scuba diver shy like in the Keys or do they look at you like the barracuda do … with indifference?

I dive both hear and the keys. Good size fish and lobster are MUCH more prevalent and seem much less scuba shy. This has to be directly related to lack of dive pressure. Riding a few miles and getting in the shallow bathtub water in the keys if nothing. Running 30 plus miles offshore and diving in excess of 100 to 130 feet with water temps in the uper 50s requires a much larger pucker factor.

If you really want to go for a ride anchor over any wreck, go down the anchor rope, before you hit the bottom you will be surrounded by a large school of amberjacks. They get right on top of you. You can easly touch them with your hands. When one of the #70 plus pounders swims by (Yes there are a good number that big) stick that spring steel in his side. Oh yea he will drag you. Be prepared to loose you gun and spear. You will only do it once though. It will fall into that category of “lifes little lessons”:smiley::smiley:

Oh man, I need to get back into shape. That all sounds like fun, well, except the 30 mile ride and the 50 degree water … I hates the quarter inch wetsuit.
