First TW trout of 2014 for me today (yay!) Still not much bait showing and the water is still only 55F. The action wasn’t en fuego but went 1 for 3.

Got a real nice one on Trout Trick at 21.5" (released) This was a very healthy looking trout and kicked away strong.

Gnats were real bad!

Ended up with 14 trout, smallest 10". Was real happy with the size.
1 @ 15"
2@ 16"
4 @ 17"
I think there will be a lot of 21+ caught this year. Last year that year-class were around 19-20" and I’m thinking they are now 21-23".
Almost all were caught on Trout Tricks today.

When does the trout fishing stop around here, I would imagine soon (April?) with the water warming up?
Them gnats are sets of flying teeth, and when the come, they come in packs. They work great on recruits at Parris Island though. Gnats were a DI’s best friend (ha,ha). Nice trout!

I see you’re successfully using a red jig head with the TT. That’s good to know. I’ve been using the 1/8 oz steel jig head that’s recommended on the TT site… can’t cast very far with that guy.

Trout are caught year round in these parts. They do disappear in MI during warm months but thats about the only place.
Nice, man I can’t wait to get my boat
Nice, wanna go walking Friday night?

I sometimes use the Cotee jig with them but I prefer the 1/8 oz gami. My local shop has not had them in months so…
The 1/8 will produce better in most cases.

surprise I didn’t run into you this weekend. Those are some nice trouts and I plan to see if that 18.5" is still in the area where it was released. Nice report

Very nice Dave. Dying to get down that way but family obligations have kept me on dry land lately. Dang I hate them gnats!

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
Nice job there Mr. Optiker. “You never know, until you go” I try to keep some cheap cigars in the tackle box for those pesky noseeum’s. A cloud of blue smoke near your face keeps them out of your nose and ears, but the backs of your hands will take merciless abuse. I figure it into the price we pay for a decent tug, and a good fishing story.

Nice report Dave. Making me jealous. 3 more weeks of soccer.
Nice report. I hope you’re right on the 21" range fish. I was getting a few in the 17-18 at the end of last season. I’d like to bump that a bit this year.

We were out sun morning as well. We were out fishing the wand and I have never experienced the gnats that bad. I have had them bad at certain spots but you could eventually find a spot where they weren’t. Sunday morning they were bad everywhere we went on the Wando. It was no bueno
I’ve had them much worse at Edisto in spring. Once I got bit in the white of my eye! That sucked!
Sunday I had long pants and long sleeves in anticipation of gnats. One thing I brought and am glad I did was a buff. I had it covering my whole head with just my eyes showing and it really made a difference. I didn’t use any spray, although No Natz is pretty good but its not perfect. Covering up is the best way IMO.
Andy, I hear ya on the sports. I’ve got 2 in HS sports (Soccer and Track, plus I’m coaching track) so I’m covered up - enjoying every minute, but not much time for fishing.

I heard someone swear by these things before. Any of you ever used them? Do they work for gnats?
