3 Cobia Nearshore

My buddy David and I found the Cobia yesterday at the Nearshore Reef. We worked super hard to pick these three fish out of the school of 8 or 10 fish. The wouldn’t eat ANYTHING but the magic bait. An old Keys guy told me about this super secret surefire cobia killer and every time I’ve put it in front of a fish, they eat it. Williamson Jet Popper with 6/0 Gama 4x circles. I’ve tried other poppers, lures, Hogy jerk baits, Hogy flounder grubs, etc but they don’t work the same as these are hands down the best cobia bait I’ve ever used. It’s outfished live and dead bait every time. The circles ensure a much better hookup than the trebles so they’re a must have as the cobia will sit and eat the bait and spit it out when they feel the trebles. Go see Scott or Simon at the West Ashley Haddrell’s Point and check out one of these badboys.

Might as well share the gift of knowledge!

Nice haul!! Thanks for the report!!
Forgive my ignorance here, so you are fishing the lure with a circle on both hook loops? I’ve used circles for years but never on a lure…

Glad to see you got out there and bust 'em. I haven’t forgot about you either. I’ll get up with you by Monday.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but the Nearshore Reef right off the Jetties? I didn’t realize Cobia came in that close to the harbor.

Would that be the elusive Atlantic Spadefish in that picture as well? Curios to know if they have made their debut inshore yet?

Yeah 8 lb spadefish. Only one we landed all day, the other dropped off the hook at the boat.

They were there thick nice and close and we were super pleased to see them. I’d bet they’ll hang around for a hot minute. Thank goodness we had the magic bait as they turned their ugly noses up at everything else live or dead.

I’m surprised they don’t come IN the harbor.

Sure, but not enough to really target like Beaufort.

THERE ARE NO COBIA AT THE NEARSHORE REEFS. THEY ARE ALL AT THE 60 AND Y73. GO GET EM!!

I have a few of those jet head chugger lures. Tried them on dolphin but they wouldn’t go for it. I’ll keep trying.

I was just curious because the post says there was a school of 8 to 10 at the Nearshore Reef.
