3 More Pigs

My son had been asking me to take him hog hunting, so over the Thanksgiving break I took him. We hunted up in the FMNF. My plan was to make a big loop back to the truck. I wasn’t really expecting to see anything, just let my son have the experience of the hunt and show him some signs/tracks/wallows. It started raining about halfway through the loop and he said he was ready to go home. I was to, so we cut the loop short and started heading in a line back toward the truck. I started seeing some fresh sign so started paying a little closer attention. Sure enough I saw some movement about 75 yards ahead. I moved around a little to get a better view and raised my scope. A hog was staring right toward me. I pulled the trigger and put a 150 grain 30-06 bullet right below its left eye. I swung left and saw another one and dropped it with a neck shot. Saw one more little one and dropped it too. I was really proud of my son, I wouldn’t have been able to haul the pigs out without his help carrying my backpack. We had to bushwhack through some seriously thick stuff. My freezer is now full of pork and he got his hog-hunting fix. Win/win.

I’d like to have the little one on a grill. That’s awesome…

Yeah Fracwilt, we are in the pork right now! Giving a lot of it to friends.

Best part is you killed 3 more of those nasty vermin. Congrats to both of you.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Salty any pigs taken this year at Hammerhead?

Nope, nocturnal bastards. Can’t catch them during the day, empty out feeders as fast as you can fill them.

Salty, are they staying around any where close to daylight and then leaving? If you could figure out where they are hiding out during the day and get in-between the feeder and the hideout, maybe catch them coming in:question:

They have a huge area of young pines they stay in. They travel all over the club and its almost impossible to get to them without dogs. We’ll bring the dogs in in a few weeks to hurt them. Not worth messing up the deer hunting now for them. Concentrate the food and we can narrow it down.

We got some healthy one. Hopefully they’re so fat the dogs can catch them one after the other in a few weeks.
