304 or 316???

Looking at boat ladders and seeing 304 and 316 stainless. I understand that the numbers mean the stainless is made of different metals but, is one that much more superior (as far as use in a ladder) that I should look for one over the other?

Thanks

316 L us superior in corrosion resistance. The L means low carbon.

We use 316 L for equipment/piping that comes in contact with extremely corrosive chemicals.

If the price difference us small, 316 us the better material.

After more reading, 316 us recommended for salt water . But this is for heavy industrial/40 year service application… 304 is probably fine for a boat.

316 whenever you can is best.

316 is better for salt. High chloride levels cause crevice corrosion. It happens faster in the heat affected zone around welds.

With that said, a 304 ladder would likely still outlive the boat., depending on quality of construction and whether or not the builder passivated the assembly after welding.

boring metallurgy stuff I learned in welding class 30 some years ago.

Boat drinks, Waitress I need 2 more boat drinks!

Thanks guys, that was the info I was looking for. I worked in a pipe business years ago and we sold 304 and 316 but not for boat ladders, just wanted some “expert” opinions.
