30tw vs 30vw

I am looking to add a few Penn 30s to my set. I already own two 30tws and want to know if it is worth the extra money to purchase 30vws? Are the 30vws just tw’s in a fancy new case?

TW’s aren’t made anymore.

The VSW series has slightly better drags, both in full power range and as far as predictability and repeatability when set before a trip. The gear shift is better on the two speed models as well. The looks are the biggest change. 2000-current look instead of 1980-1999 look.

You did not ask, but the Penn VSX is a major step up from both the TW and VSW. The VSX was put out in response to Avet’s EXW30/2 and 50/2. Lighter, stronger, smoother.

Going from a TW or VSW to a VSX or Avet EXW would be very significant. Going from a TW to a VSW is not going to be that significant other than looks. There is a difference for sure, but whether it’s worth it is up to you.

Some people swear by their old TW’s, and they know how to take care of them easily, and they’re easy to improve the drags with some modifications to make them as good or better than VSW’s.
