31 Cape Horn Info

I’m looking pretty hard at a used 31 Cape Horn that is located on the Gulf Coast. I’m pretty excited about the boat, but I’m hesitant to make the road trip to check it out because I’ve never been on one. Does anybody know of anyone local who has a 31 Cape Horn and may be willing to give me a tour, or at least offer some thoughts over the phone?

BrianH on this site has one. The boat is kept in the upstate, but he fishes out of Charleston.

There is also a light blue hull someone has in town. I cannot recall the owner’s name.

Both boats have F300’s I believe.

We dive off of one pretty regularly. It’s a good boat for its size. It tends to get a little wet, but for a 31’ it rides pretty well. It also burns very little fuel and does well with heavy loads. We regularly put 15-20 steel 120’s, 500 lbs of gear, and 4 people and the boat still performs well. Don’t expect the room or ride of a 35’ contender, but for the price and size, it’s a great boat.

I don’t think you can go wrong with a Cape Horn. I had a 21 it was about as solid of a boat that you could ask for. Very well built and a smooth ride. I would buy another one in a skinny minute.

Wet

I have a CH 24xs. I live right off the beach. Message me if you want to stop by and check it out. Not the same sized boat but at least you can get an idea for fit and finish.

I’ve never been in a 31, but I surveyed a 24 and a 26 for a friend of mine and was fairly impressed with how well they were built. They were not fancy, the interior finish is not flashy and shiny. But very sturdy. It’s a boat built to use and not worry about too much. My friend bought the 26 and uses it as a dive boat. He loves it.

what year is the hull? The newer one ride decent. Older ones not so much. 23 degreee dead rise.
You can search thehulltruth and find info about it.
the guy I bought my contender from also had a cape horn for sale. Less money of course. I asked him how the cape horn ride was.He said well, that’s why I bought the contender!
Cape horns are heavy and known to use more fuel. They are a solid boat though and a good value

Thanks to everyone for the input. It was fun researching and learning about the boat. I took advice from this forum in stride and made the seller and offer, but we couldn’t come together on price. Never know if he might change his mind . . .
