3116 Cats

Looking at purchasing a boat with 3116 Cats. The engines have 2600 hours on them .My concerns is how much longer before a overhaul will be needed?

There is no standard timeframe. Get an engine survey done to include an oil analysis. Those results will dictate the shape of the engine and give you a good idea on bearing and ring wear, as well as internal leaks. Different contaminates will indicate different things. A Catepiller technician can download all the history from the ECM and those results will also be helpful in making a decision on a rebuild.

Boze12, all Cat engines have a standard time frame for rebuild.

IMO the 3116 was not Cat’s best engine, but also not a terrible choice as long as it was not the “soft block” made in france. Call a cat dealer with serial number and they can tell you.

Those engines were used in a lot of applications. With service recorders from previous owner 2600 hour wouldn’t concern me along with oil analysis like captbryan suggested. Also a “blow-by” test would be prudent.

The 3116 was an ok engine but not the biggest power source and not very fuel effiecent. it evolved into the 3126 and then the c7

That’s a lot of cats
