Thought I would share our winter project, since the fishing is slow! This is a 1989 Scarab Super Sport 34’, we have owned the boat for 5 years and it is time for a refit. Below is a list of what we plan on doing.
Sand and paint entire inside of boat using 1-part interlux
Re-glass hatches, very bad soft spots due to age
Install 2000 gal. bilge pumps(2)
New Console (contender style)
rewire batteries so they can be placed under console, instead of in transom
New t-top, would like a hard top, but probably will opt for canvas due to $
Re-upholsterd all cushions
New leaning post, with built in live well
new electronics
Install bennett trim tabs, boat came with none
Rebuild port powerhead
Plan on having boat ready by May! Will keep updates has we get different stages complete, we welcome any suggestions as we endure this project.
Here are some photos after we have taken everything out. The console was a pain, had to use a buddy’s shop and lift it out with forklift. Will be getting ready for paint next week. Did a inspection of the stringers and everything looks fairly dry. Will also have to change the fittings on the fuel tank, it appears in decent condition, I am really trying to avoid taking it out, have heard from others it is difficult.
The '89 Yamaha had a steel shift shaft and steering arm so when you pull the powerhead; make sure the shift shaft is replaced with a stainless one if it has not been done previously.
That is also a great time to remove the rust scale from the steering arm and treat it to help prevent rust if you elect not to replace it.
I may take you up on the control, I see that you got a project boat as well, I have a leaning post, ttop, and console. Let me know if you are interested, I can shoot you some pics.
Finally got all the hardware off the boat, bow rails, cleats, rod holder, etc What a pain! Boat is ready for sanding! We were debating about pulling the fuel tank, but finally decided it was a good idea. Here are some pics.
