36.6 GAG! Over niter report.

Made it down to Charleston SC last weekend (7/26-7/28) to do an over night trip since we had to pull the plug on my Gulf Of Mexico trip due to storms. Headed out to 165 ft of water and did well catching some nice b-liners and a huge 7 lb trigger fish. We only caught one keeper grouper and what a keeper it was…a 36.65lb gag! Some fish we caught using bait but the majority of them were caught using a small Diawa Pirate Jig tipped with squid. This jig has two hooks out the back just like the lucainis jigs. This one really produces for me when the fish are picky. I was really suprised when that big grouper hit that little jig! I hooked another one later that straightened out the hooks. We also caught a few AJs on knife jigs. And to add some excitement we also got a small tiger shark that was released.

Nice!. Looks almost like it could be a black grouper with those dark fins, but it could just be the light.

nice catch!

  • try sending down one of those B-liners for grouper next time.

How do you rig something like that?

War Eagle!

20oz or larger sinker (I use custom made leads, up to 4 lbs), a strong 3 way swivel or a 1.6mm swivel sleeve, 6-8’ of 150lb fluro, 12/0 Owner Super Mutu circle hook, bridle rigged or through the eye sockets. If the current is light, I clip the lower section of the tail, and hook above the anal fin.

DO you free spool, dead line or troll that setup?

War Eagle!

Have you ever bottom fished?

My question would be in this instance, would you butterfly the b liner or just send him down as is with a couple hooks in him.

2nd q…how far off bottom once you hit bottom do you keep him?

I think he means to sent it back down alive. Thats what I would do with those instructions. He may chime back in to clairfy.

if you butterfly him, every little ■■■■ eater will get a bite. If you send him down whole, only a BIG fish can eat him. ON THE BOTTOM ON THE BOTTOM ON THE BOTTOM ON THE BOTTOM ON THE BOTTOM.

Off the bottom, and you will get your arms stretched by a Reef Donkey.

Or you could just drop down an 6 oz jig on a trevella rod using a spinning reel loaded with 550 yards or PE 8 line on it like I did and get cha one!!:sunglasses:.
The jigs caught more fish than the live baiters did…fyi…

okay, gotcha, on the bottom, wait for the big one to SLAM!!! I think I understand now…and live, whole, just like the other fish

The reel is a shimano sagoosa 18000 spinning reel…loaded with 550 yards of PE 6 “100 lb test color coded line… it changes color every 33 ft” THe rod is a shimano trevala jigging rod extra heavy (rated for 80-200 lb line). The jig…like most of my jigs came from anglers-proshop online. The is a Diawa Pirate Jig. I absolutely love fishing with this set up!! It is light enough to work all day…and STressRelief…you saw me fish my arse off ALL day and most of the night with it…but yet strong enough to make 70 lb amberjack pee them selves in 5 -10 minutes.
I am hooked on jigging…I used to be a die hard trolling fisherman…but you better bet I will pulling some yellow fin and blue fin tuna soon with this set up! By the way…when we going fishing again??
