Anyone here if 3rd battalion pond will ever be open to fishing again, or does anyone know if you can put a kayak in and not fish.
no right now it’s still close. Shame because you can see monster size tails rooting in the shallows both black drum and reds. In Oct there were tons of sheepshead swimming right next to the dock. I run around the perimeter alot on you can see schools of 40-50" reds in a foot of water.

Where is this place at? i know its not open to fishing but i would like to drive out to it to show my mom and dad so they understand my excitment and drive to fish all the time! is their a dock that you can walk on? if you walk around the edge can you see these monsters right in you line of sight?
There is no greater fan of fly fishing than the mud minnow.
just google 3rd battalion pond parris island sc
If I can ask a stupid question, why is it closed? Because of Base security?
Because of the mercury levels. Atleast that was the reason they gave.

Who closed it DNR or the Marines?
PI had a new CG take over and he decided to close it. Even though the levels of heavy metal in the fish are lower than that of similiar fish caught in the Wando. Was told that there were a lot of philipino women that lived on base and would fish and keep everything to eat and that was one of the reasons. We tried to talk them into making it a catch and release only fishing spot but they would not go for it. Even our congressman Joe Wilson got involved and they decided to not open it back up.

Great info s1tpilot to bad its a beautiful saltwater lake/pond even if its just for kayaking.
Not a great reason to shut it down for everything! All they had to do was get the chain of command to order those with family members that fish it, not to eat a lot of the fish. The Marines, can follow orders, if you use small words!
LOL!!
Retired Army
Well you can’t just blame the Filipino ladies because that place was fished heavily by retired military guys, active duty guys, Filipino spouse married to OLD retired guys, black guys, white guys and a ton of the civilian’s that work on the base. So it was heavily fish for such a small area and when the shrimps are in you can see people netting everywhere, so the fish were spooked alot. Now that the water is clear you can see those 50" Reds sunning at noon on the flats and BIG ole flunders by the pipes! Some of the Bull reds are potential world records in there, it’s like mosquito lagoon in Fl but totally OFF LIMITS, it sucks!

I think its called natural selection …
Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.
