Ok, so how do you guys take decent measurement pics of big fish in a kayak? I got lucky with the biggest red I’ve ever caught this evening and this is the best pic I got:
This was partially due to the fact that in the rush to get out there fishing I’d thrown everything in the cooler for ease of carrying and the camera was against the ice. Fogged up as soon as I brought it out.
But still, how would I have gotten an accurate pic of this fish? Do you carry a 3’ board with a dnr sticker on it?
i remember somebody i used to know 7 or 8 years ago that had a homemade tri-fold wood board they used for measurements. it was about 12" x 8" per board and had hinges between the boards. it wasn’t used on a kayak, but it could definitely work. you’d be able to set the fish on it and measure/photograph it more accurately than the above picture. somebody probably has a better or more efficient idea though.
A buddy in the midstate made this for me.
Before I got it I used the footwells
or a baord

Depending on where you are fishing you can get out of the yak and photograph the fish. I have a small number fo the SCDNR sticker rulers and will have them at the Capts meeting. Get there early to grab one or look around your local tackle shops, wally worlds and such. They are free but later in the season hard to find. in TooBusys firat 2 pix above he is using a 321fish.com sticker ruler. it is like 45 inches long and a sticker as well. He donated some to us but I think we are out of them… I will have all I have left at the capts meeting. If you are really new to kayak fishing ya might want to sit inthe yak in the backyard and practice shooting in your lap. I have to be fair so if I can;t see the fishes nose on the 0 and the tail measurement I can;t score the fish.

TooBusy, I like the “oversized sheetrock mud tray” in the first pic! It’s clear I’d have to come up with something more workable than what I’ve got. I don’t usually take pics of the fish and I’m conscious of wanting to get the fish back in the water asap. This guy was out of the water for a while and put up a long fight but he swam off strongly when released.
Nikon, there was no place to get out of the boat at this spot. I was holding the camera above my head to get it to pan wide enough. Yes, I need pracice…
I’m supposed to go to a wedding that weekend but I still might be able to make Saturday free. Do we have up til Friday eve to sign up for the tournament? Any word on what prizes will be offered yet? I’m thinking this fish would have been a likely tournament winner!
Friday evening is the capts meeting and the main registration. The biggest problem is if people can’t make the capts meeting I am not sure how to get them their identifier before fishihg starts. I am thinking I will have to be somewhere early Saturday for a couple hours to do a Day-of registraion. I’ll have that figured out this week.
Redfish are pretty hardy but like you said you don;t want to keep them out of the water too long. Somehting you can do is after you catch the fish, using a boga or a net keep him in the water for a bit to let your nerves settle and let the fish recover a little. Keep the fish hooked, secure your rod and put the fish closer to your feet across the kayak for measuring/photo. 99% of the time I am close enough to an oyster bar or grass flat I can get out but wiht a little practice photographing your fish gets easier.
Just some constructive criticisim, the photo you put up is of a really nice fish but if this were turned on for score it would be DQ’d. The nose has to be on zero. To get the truest measurement make sure your fish is on the ruler. As for the tournament winner… I dunno about that that is an awesome CPR fish though! While the Ville has big fish it is harder to catch them and since the fishing is open to all Charleston waters, there are some spots that produce HUGE reds in the 35" to 40" range I have even seen a 46" red landed in a kayak
I am hoping we have a lot of big reds this year, but I just want everyone to enjoy a day on the water and have fun!
As for PRizes… the conventional division: (as of this writing)
1st is a Penn Rod and Reel from the Charleston Angler
2nd: still looking for a sponsor
3rd: Still looking for a sponsor
I do have some prizes that have been donated like a Year Pass to SC State parks, and a Free bed liner for a pick-up but I’d like to have fishing prizes for the placings, if I can’t find sponsors to provide rods, reels, etc then we will go with these.
Fly Division:
1st Fly Rod from March Brown Ltd.
2nd
Nikon, I’m aware that this pic would not qualify for any official measurement. I wasn’t trying for that but it did make me realize that I don’t have a good system for getting a clear pic. The trouble I was having was compounded by a cold camera and I just decided the fish had been out of the water long enough. Good thought on leaving the fish in the water/net while I get set up though. If I’m able to enter the tourney I’ll have a photo board of some kind set up first.
And if I enter, I’ll plan on catching a bigger one!
There ya go… rip some lips!!!

I’m new at this…so what is meant “at Safe Light”? Is this 1 hr before sunrise or at sunrise?
Thanks
I think the “official ruling” will be at the Capts meeting. My gut tells me 7am
Who’s Ready for a Sleigh Ride? www.KayakFishSC.com
So, is a 321 fish ruler good enough if we pull it tight in the pic or would we need a board under the ruler? I think I’m going to order one.
For the last 2 years we’ve handed out fish rulers at the Capts meeting. Shoot nikonjedi a note to see if he has them this year.
a 321 pulled tight has been ok in the past for this, SCKF, KBF, and 321 challenges plus a host of live tournaments. Good thing about a 321 is that it’s too stiff to fold, so no easy way to cheat. The DNR tape… well not so much.
Who’s Ready for a Sleigh Ride? www.KayakFishSC.com
sunrise is 7:18 AM so we will call safe light at 7am although if you launch before 7:18 have a light or Mr. Green Jeans may want to talk to you. High tide is going to be at 6:07 (depending on where you fish) so we’ll be starting on a falling tide and ending on a rising tide. Lately, wiht the exception of tailiers in the grass a falling, low then rising tide have been better for fishing. As for the rulers, I think I have maybe one 321 fish ruler left and I do have some of the DNR rulers. These will be free at the Capts meeting.
Having the ruler on a board or something makes it easier to see/score the fish and if there is a lot of gaps under the fish and it is questionable I am not going to be able to score the fish, gotta be fair to everyone, but laying in a footwell will be fine. A peice of pvc cut in half and the ruler stuck to the inside works well too. Keep the questions coming… we’ll go over everything at the capts meeting.
we want this to be fun and fair so we are not as strict as the IFA or JAX, if we had major sponsors and had big money involved we’d be more strict but since none of the big guys love us we juast fish and have a good time. I PROMISE no polygraphs for the winners

Well looks like we have a few people dropping out due to other events but we are still pressing forward. I just got a call and My Mechanic Auto Center in Columbia has donated a new pair of Costa Del Mar Hammerhead sunglasses as a prize. The capts meeting is this coming Friday and Fishing is one week away! Looking forward to meeting everyone!
