I posted this in the “freshwater” section, but this forum seems to get more action
I have a 22ft pontoon with a yamaha 115. With 3 adults it gets to about 16-17 mph.
I am looking at options to speed it up. I have read a ton about adding a 3rd toon or a water glide, strakes extra.
Who has done any of this and what were the results?
I know you realize this but 16-17 mph is REALLY SLOW for your pontoon setup. To give a comparison I have a 24’ pontoon (2 toons) with a 50 Honda and it will do 19-20 loaded with 4 and all the gear required for fishing. 22+ with a lighter load. This is on the speedo and confirmed on the GPS. Because it adds weight I’m not sure you will see a sizable speed increase with a 3rd toon, but more importantly it adds to stability. Possibly the real cause is your motor foot is causing drag or your prop is not optimized. In general without seeing it, I would expect your boat to do 25+ with that length and motor. Factors like cabins or really heavy furniture might change that some…
Agreed with scgmc about your prop. What does your tach say your motor is doing at full speed? If you don’t have a tack, you can get a digital universal tach for $20-50.
If you aren’t hitting your max RPM at WOT, then drop yourself in pitch.

WOT is in line with the motor (I dont recall what it is but I had the yamaha page open looking at when I tested, it was real close)
The thought is that a 3rd tune would lift the boat higher in the water giving it more of a v-hull effect.
Weston, do you know what prop you have? I will be at the lake next weekend to check mine, it is not stamped anywhere that I can see. Plan to take it off and check again.
It is a 4 stroke. I can’t remember the rpms but it is close to what Yamaha says it should be.
The 2 other boats talked about in this post both have strakes. Can they make that much of a difference?
I’ve seen tri-toons on the Diversion canal go vastly more fast than a pontoon should ever be allowed to go. I don’t know anything about the length of the toon or the size of the motor, but ludicrous speed is possible on pontoons for sure.

I finally got the chance to get up there. Clean the everything under the waterline.
Before cleaning with me and 1/2 tank it got 18-19mph
After cleaning it got 26mph.
I am happy with that but want more. So I took the prop off to get the size. It was stamped on the motor side of the prop.
The Prop is 13 5/8 x 13
What is a better prop to try?
